Subject: rattle / leaky intake IP: Logged
Message: My '99 Dakota 5.2 has a rattle in 2nd or 3rd over 3g's sounds like a valve guide or lifter or something but its driving me nuts. Talked to the dealer didn't have much to say "nature of the beast" any thoughts would be appreciated. Also just found out lower intake manifold gasket leaking - dacent amount of oil inside manifold with less than 50 thousand miles. I've owned alot of different vehicles never had a leaky intake any thoughts why it leaked?

Message: hey, the rattle you hear is your rockers, unless it makes a load bang it will be perfectly normal.
The dealership could not tell me any thing about the leaks either, but they don't open the hearts up to much either, so the sent me to their rebuild shop. This guy dreams dodge when he sleeps, he said that 318s have leaked since the beginning of time, but it never had a negative effect so they never delt with it. If it bothers you, put a fresh gasket on. Thats what i did and it leaked more. Keep an eye on it for 10k and if it is worse have the gasket swaped and the pan cleaned. Your motor is fine, just enjoy 'er.
By the way when you have the intake off, it would not be much more work to put a new cam in.....

Message: The gasket that is leaking on your vehicle bflannie is not the problem that the 318 has had since the beginning of time as it sounds like your plenum pan gasket is leaking. This is the gasket that you cannot see unless you have the intake off of the engine and it is on the bottom. They have had this problem since that intake was introduced on the 318 but the problem lies in the gasket. Within the last 6 months they finally revised the gasket with a steel one instead of a fabric one which would split and cause oil ingestion, misfires, etc. If your do the work yourself pay particular attention to the torque procedures and specs. Take your time and it will not leak.
