Well with just over 1 month left to go before the track re-open i am getting excited. I am a new-commer to "LEGAL" drag racing. I was wondering if anyone could give me any tips on what i can do to not look like i am getting left in the dust. I have a 2001 RT. The mods i have and will be racing with are as follows...
K&N Cold air induction
M1 intake manifold
Hypertech Power Programmer III
Mopar Performance Headers
Gibson Single 3inch Cat-Back
NO Converters
And all of the little stuff...like 180 thermostat
Autolite 3923
Accell Cap and Rotor
Accell 9000 Extreem Blue wires
Synthetic rear end fluid
Synthetic Oil with K&N oil filter
Also...i was wondering what you thought that i would be running with these mods also. By May i will have a throttle body and roller rockers also...thanks.

Three tips that worked for me.
1- dont try and show off with crazy burnouts and high
RPM launches
2- bring a few bags of ice for the intake and intake
manifold (colder the better)
3- drop a few psi on the rear tires for a little more grip
I'm sure there's prolly a billion more tips, but these
should help.

Don't drop the PSi too low (unless you're running slicks) on street tires. You might have better traction, but the overall drag from the increased resistance will actually slow you down.

I left the tailgate on, but down. Removing the spare helps with weight reduction, but it's taking weight off the back end. Kind of a double edged sword (especially in a truck). 1/4-1/8 th of a tank of gas to run.

I predict a 14.7ish... Depends on the track, and you're 60' time.

On stock RSAs, air down to 20 psi--- don't do a smokey burnout-- Just get them 'warm' without the waterbox (most places frown on street tires in the waterbox anyway because they'll carry water in the tread-- putting it at the start and some down the track).

Do not deep stage-- barely break the 2nd beam and stop-

Powerbrake up to about 1100-1200 rpm.

1st Yellow
(pause- light off)
2nd Yellow
(pause- light off)<--- pop your foot off the brake
3rd Yellow
(pause - light off)<--- in a smooth motion, push your gas pedal 1/2 way
GREEN!
after the first few feet, roll your foot to the floor and leave it there.

Enjoy a 2.1-2.0 or better 60' time---

And, if you run it like that-- on the lights... you'll net a .5xx light.

I average a .560 now-- with 2 perfect .500 lights, and numerous .501s, .510/.512

EVEN if you red light, note your time-- I pulled a .499 last time out--- "Missed it by (that) much"

From the time you see the 3rd yellow, it will be GREEN before your truck begins to even move-- and put you in the .750-.8xx range.

Practice it-- you'll have a blast.

(man, makes me want to go racing now... hmmm)

removing the tailgate, spare, and having 1/8th of a tank all takes the weight off the back of the truck so wouldnt it produce way too much wheelspin and get a worse 1/4 mile time?

Depends on how well your traction is to begin with. It's good to run in 'full trim', see how things are-- then take off the spare, tailgate, t-cover.... If you can work on the launch, the 100#+ weight you removed will show a good improvement.

A wise choice, if you want to race frequently (at least once a month)--- Get some slicks and Durango 15x8 wheels. You'll save you expensive 17" tires from wear and more tear--- the slicks will most likely last a couple years worth of racing-- and your effect gear ratio drops to a 4.22 with 26" tall MT ET slicks--

My best 60' is a 1.81 second with the 26" MT ETs... (no tailgate, spare, or t cover, and approx 5 gallons of gas (2 gallons of 91, 3 gallons of VP 100+ unleaded)).

Hey Rtdkota...
I am really thinking about doing what you said about the smaller rims but i still have a couple more questions. What do you do about the front rims and tires. Do you just go with the slicks in the back with the 15x8 rims and do something different up front or what?

Is that what most of you guys are doing? Getting 15x8 Durango rims and running slicks on those? Has anyone gotten, say, 15x10 aftermarket rims to run slicks with? I guess what I'm asking is how wide can we go with a 26" tall tire?

I run the Durango wheels in the back, 26x10.5x15 MT ETs... You can run a 26x11.5x15, or a 28x10x15, or a 28x11.5x15 (gotta double check the last two). I run my stock wheels up front. 17" RT wheels.

I still have 2- 15x8 wheels for sale, $90+ shipping. I bought 4, and already had 2 with 26" slicks (was going to run a 28" with N20, try that-- and get the 15x8 for the front narrowed to 15x4-3.5--- but with Viper brakes on the horizon, it would be a waste of $$$ for me.)

The 15x8 wheels and tires are probably 20# lighter EACH compared to the RT wheels...

when i run, i powerstall the converter to about 1800-2000rpm, then go on the 3rd yellow, i don't leave the line in low gear, i leave in drive w/ o/d off, i just keep it there all the way, also, i don't floor it off the line either, i quickly ease into it. my last run was a 14.68@96mph with a .503r/t.

I can't do that b/c my powerband is at higher RPM levels due to the HO Intake and larger TB installs I did, not to mention my true dual exhaust. If I don't manually shift, I miss my maximum band of power.

Another thing...these three cars we're talking about

3.5L Altima
3.5L Maxima
3.8L S/C GTP

They all have about the same basic performance numbers in the 1/4. They are all FWD (difficult, at best to race effectively), but they are all really great cars for the money. Now, if you wanted total bang for the buck, it'd be the Altima 3.5 base model w/ 5 speed. For the difference you pay for the other cars, you could add either a S/C or a T/C and kick the ever loving dog sh!t out of either the GTP or the Max, and still be out the same amount of money. Hopefully not many of the Altima drivers will do that, though :) I like being one of the fastest FWD sedans out there stock.

I have a pair of 2002 16x8 factory mags with Mickey Thompson 27 11.50 16 Sportsman pros for 300 plus shipping. If you need traction on street or strip these will work. They wont last as long on the street as ETs but will hook better on launch. To answer popeye powerbraking is brake on hard enough to stop truck from moving with throtle down to desired RPM before launch.
