the 3.8 Firebird is a joke, I clean them up all the time with my 4.7L ... R/T wouldn't have any troubles. ... V8 Firebird is a whole different story though

Last year I saw a stock GTP run a 15.0xx. I believe it was a 2000 model. So yes, the R/T will lose.

As for the V8 Firebird, they run mid 14's.

If the drivers are equal, you'll lose. If the GTP driver knows his car, you'll lose badly. If he drives like a moron and slips out of the hole, you'll most likely still lose b/c he is boosted and you are not. Sucks, huh?

id say it would be pretty close and that if it were a regualar cab r/t it would be dead even. ive seen many stock regular cabs get 14.9 sec quarter mile and 6.9 sec 0-60. the gtp goes 0-60 in 6.8 sec so its real close.

I owned a 97 GTP and it was pretty fast stock, but I installed a smaller nose drive pulley which shot the boost up to 10 PSI from the stock 8 PSI and I removed the resonator from the exhaust, installed a K&N filter. and HOLLY CRAP it was way way Faster than befor, I am talking seat of the pants back seat fast, not to mention it would get up to 135 MPH from a dead stop in no time, The RT will lose. I sold it cause I couldnt keep my foot out of it, I liked the 135 MPH all the time, guys in the GP club were seeing 150 MPh out of the cars, the headsup display on windshield does not lie, this feature is Awsome..

I dont know what everyone is talking about with the GTP Supercharged model runs mid 15's because they don't. The slowest I have seen ran a 14.7 bone stock. So I would have to say that you would lose to one if your running a stock r/t cc, if you had a stock regular cab I would say give it a shot but I still think that you would lose stock to stock, thats just my 2 cents...

Jim, you can't make a total blanket statement like that. I bet the GTP's don't get into the 14's at all in Denver. I bet they don't get that in the Arizona desert during the middle of summer, either. My times were from GA and related to Commerce raceway. Those numbers are solid facts.

Unfortunately the S/C Pontiac is considerably faster than my natural aspirated dakota.

Had considered increasing the boost with a smaller pulley, but was worried that it might slow the pontiac down off the line, as it already spins the tires too easily.

Then couple weeks later they had a GTP club meet at the track. Most of em had a headlight removed. It looked funny but prolly theyre putting the air intake there. Fastest guy was 12.8 Avg. was like 14.5 - 15.0

That S/C'ed 3.8L does like the mods. Do intake or the correct exhaust work, and whoever is racing them is in trouble. If they do pulley swaps/mods, well, you're screwed again.

Hi guys. I have a 2000 GTP that is VERY lightly modded with only a cold air intake, reprogramed pcm,one size smaller than stock pulley, and minimal exhaust work (took out a restrictive "U" bend in the stock exhaust pipe and replaced it with a straight pice of stock diameter pipe.) I have only drag raced it 3 times so far, and my best time is a 13.71 @ 102.08 mph with a CRAPPY 2.29 60ft. A REALLY good 60ft. for us GTP's is a 2.0x 60ft. My PB 60ft. so far is a 2.15 :( I suck at launching.

I go racing at San Antonio Raceway in San Antonio,TX so if any of you go there and see a bunch of Grand Prix's come say "hey".

The reason I came here, is to do a little research. I am a member of ClubGP: www.clubgp.com

If you go to the "Message Forum" and do a search on "Stock GTP Times" you will see that the majority of stock GTP's run between 14.4 - 14.8 in the 1/4 mile. Some have run low 14's and other's have run low 15's. The biggest problem with the GTP's is getting them to hook of the line. Those who have run high 14's and up, just are not hooking up. My first run with my GTP was a 14.57 and that was with a 2.32 60ft.

Now, back to my research :)

There is a R/T owner who posted in the ClubGP "Racing Forum" that the STOCK time for the 5.9 R/T is 6.3 0-60 mph.

http://www.clubgp.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=6449492&FORUM_ID=3&CAT_ID=6&Forum_Title=ClubGP+%2D+Racing+Stories&Topic_Title=gt+vs%2E+5%2E9+dakotaR%2FT

I thought this sounds a little too fast, but I would like to know from some of you guys here. I am not trying to start a flame war, just trying to get more educated about what I think is a bad azz truck.

So does a STOCK 5.9 R/T Dakota go 6.3 0-60mph ? And what does it do STOCK in the 1/4 ?

BTW - In the above post, it is a Grand Prix GT and not a GTP talking about racing the 5.9 R/T. The modded Grand Prix GT's run 14.4 - 14.8's (about what a stock GTP runs) with the fastest guy running a 14.2 in the 1/4.

If you have any questions, let me know.

Thanks,

Phil R.

Hey Phil, like I said on clubgp, the 6.3 0-60 is for a reg cab r/t and if it hooks. As I explained, they do indeed run out of steam the quicker they go, and aree huffing and puffing by the far end of the 1/4 mile. Thanks to an engine set for low end TQ, 3.92 rear, and some wide rims, they run great 0-60, pretty good 1/8th mile, but just OK through the 1/4.

As for the race asked about in the original thread, it'll be close. Considering you have a CC I'll give the nod to the GTP, he'll prolly get ya unless you can jump him outta the hole. If ya had a RC it'd be really, really, really close or if ya added a couple bolt-ons.

But anyhow, race, see what happens, and have fun.

I love the GTP's myself. Good looking car, and good performance for the money. I was very close to buying one last year when replacing my CSVT. I owned a '92 Bonneville SSEi before as well, and even though it wasn't the fastest thing out there, it did well with a few mods. I went with the Nissan Maxima this time around though. The VQ35DE engine is a real screamer, and there are already custom T/C and soon to be S/C applications for it. Thanks for coming over and posting Phil. Those times are exactly what I see from stock GTP's here in GA (for the most part). Modded ones run mid 13's here as well (only seen 2 of them, though). Cya around!

Thanks for the reply !

Well you certainly seem to have had a nice stable of performance vehicles. We have two ClubGP member's from Loganville:

Dave Emanuel 1997 White 2 door GP GTP
Joe Snyder 2002 White 4 door GP GT

Not sure what times they run though, as they have not posted them.

I have always liked the Contour SVT, there is even a guy who used to post on ClubGP every once and a while who had/has a supercharged CSVT. His name is Mark and he went by the screen name "WorldTour", he was from Watervliet, MI. IIRC, he was running a 13.0 with it.

I like the new Maxima's.....I'm just tired of all the new import's having as much HP as me !! LOL

What made you decide on going with the Max instead of the lighter Altima with a M6 ? I realize the Max has more STOCK horsepower, but those damn M6 Altima's are faster and also have an aftermarket following just as large as the Max's don't they ?

The decision came down to the fact that the Altima is built like a POS, where as the Maxima actually feels better (better leather, better interior materials). The Altima is nice, but the Max was nicer. And at the time, the Max had all the incentives. The 6 speed Max is still faster than the manual 5 speed Altima, even though the Altima is a bit lighter. Nissan has the Maximas torque underrated, so that's another major advantage right there. The ratings are supposed to be as follows:

Altima 3.5:
HP: 245 @ 5800 RPM
TQ: 246 @ 4400 RPM

Maxima 3.5
HP: 255 @ 5800 RPM
TQ: 246 @ 4400 RPM

Tha Altima 3.5 dyno comparisons show that they were originally underrated HP wise, hance the '02 to '03 HP difference of 5. The '02-'03 Maxima dyno comparison show the same basic HP as the Altima (sometimes more, but not by much), but significantly higher TQ levels. The actual estimated Maxima TQ levels are 265-270 TQ at teh crank based on the hundreds of dynos done in the community. That's where the difference lies in our cars. The HP is about the same overall, but our TQ is 15-20 higher at the wheels than the Altima.
