Subject: What about the cam bearings?

I'm about to install the H.O. cams in my 4.7 and I've read a lot of posts about this but, no one ever says anything about replacing the cam bearings. Does everyone just reuse the original cam bearings?

Rob,

Have you done a OHC before?

Short answer is Yes, you re-use the same bearing journals that are already there.

You can do it, use the instructions, etc., like you'll probably spend about 6-10 hours total.

Good luck

There are no pressed in bearings like you would have in an OHV engine. As Todd said, the cam rides in the journals that are machined in the head. I see a lot of wear in the future for those that try to run "battleship" valve springs, design is the same as the 2.2/2.5 heads and those aluminum journals don't live long with a lot of spring pressure.

this set up is almost bullet proof. If you use a quality oil and keep it clean and do not rev the engine with out load repeatedly like silly ricers and motorcyle drivers they experince very little ware. This is really not a high load area. High RPM abuse in excess of 8000RPM with no load is the number one cause of failures in this set up. They can be repaired in one of two ways. You can grind the cap and then rebore or you totaly rebuild or replace the journal. I have been working with this type of setup since 1979 when my Dad first let me help work on the family car! The japanesse have used this setup with great secess for many years! I doubt you will ever have a problem in this area. Just make sure you lube everything and youshould be fine. P.S. Follow torque spec.'s to the letter!!! If you over torque the caps you will destroy your cam and the caps!
