Wow from what I'm reading in this thread I made some pretty good choices when I ordered my '03 CC 4x4 4.7 5speed 355LSD the other day (looking forward to getting it mid April :)

As a non member I normally wouldn't stick my .02 in but figured I take this opportunity to ask what my $30 bucks gets me on the site. What am I missing in the members area? BTW really love what I've seen of the site so far.

oO_Rogue: Good luck. I'm not a fan of 4x4's, but the combo you selected should be the best choice when $2.00/gal. is looking back at you at the pump. '01 RC 4.7 5-spd 3:92 posi / 18-19mpg

I think the NV-3500 would be great for pulling a trailer. But you might want to check out the 545REF auto tranny.

Why,
because you never learned to correctly drive a manual tranny, and you've got an auto?

I have pulled 5,000 (or so) pounds with my NV3500 and it was great. My opinion? Stay away from autos if you can.

What really makes the difference in towing is the rear-end ratio. A 3.92 (or greater) will let your truck pull loads better up hills.

How does the 3.92 diff let you tow any better
than just shifting down a gear? Are you running
out of gears on the low side, or what?

Without the lower gearing in the diff, you can certainly drop down a gear (or two). But I am able to accelerate nicely from 30ish to 55+ while climbing up a steep grade in 3rd and 4th, and hold the speed.

With a higher diff gearing you might need to drop down to 2nd in the same situation, or just crawl up to speed from 3rd. And if the grade is just steep enough you won't be able to hold your speed. In other words, the grade is winning.

I don't know the grade's slope, but loaded big rigs do about 10-15 mph up it for the 6 mile length. But the 1st time I pulled this weight up this hill I was really p!ssed when some jerk cut in front of me while I was holding around 60. I couldn't change lanes, so I had to drop down to 30, I put it in 3rd and promptly got back up to 55+. I'm real sure I couldn't have done this with 3.55 gears.
