I've seen some people on these Forums with the new 4.7 that have gotten the 3:55 rear end. I thought the only rear ends available were the 3:21 and the 3:92 on the new dodges.

3.21...is that even an option for the Dak now? I thought they were all 3.55-3.92

I was offered 3.21; 3.55; 3.92 when I bought my truck. I didn't know any better so asked for the 3.55. Low and behold it came with the 3.92's. After taking it for a quick spin, I decided that complaining would be the wrong course of action. So I sucked up and decided to just stick with the 3.92's. That was the easiest decision i've ever made.

CThomp,

At least your truck came with equal to or better than what you ordered it with. I ordered 3.55 LSD and got 3.55 Open. The build sheet clearly stated that it was to have 3.55 LSD. Dunno what the hell the guys in MI were doing that day. Obviously my truck wasn't important enough to actually install what I ordered. Oh well, I want to go with a 3.92 rear now. Might as well have the rest of the R/T package on my SLT+.

I also got the LSD. It was a more than a pleasant surprise to recieve the 3.92's.

So did you ever get you LSD put in? If it was on the order form they should have brought one in. Do you think you'd have better results if you went from 3.55 to 4.10 instead of 3.92? Seems like you'd feel more of a kick.

LSD or Open? What is the difference? Aren't 3:55's good for overall stuff, but the 3:92 has better acceleration, right?

Is there a gas mileage difference between 3:92 or the 3:55's? Some people have said the 3:92's get crappy gas mileage. Just seeing what everyones facts and opinions are on the 3:92's.

Two thoughts...

TheSync -
(IMO) Once you've driven LSD you'll know why you don't want to live without it. Having power to both rear wheels gives an incredible amount of control: when spinning the tires on purpose, breaking loose around corners, or on irregular and/or slippery pavement. Besides is it cool to only light up one tire when trying impress the crowd?

If you do any towing or need quick starts than the 3.92 is the way to go. The difference in gearing is enough to keep stiff hills from bringing my speed way down when towing 4000 pounds. If the truck is just going to be a daily driver the 3.55 would be just fine.

Robert -
I get anywhere from 16.5 to 17.5 MPG in my 4.7L 5-speed depending on how hard I run it. I usually drive it pretty conservatively, so the top number is the number I most often get. My driving is a 65/35% mix of freeway/street.

Of course, when I tow it drops. But then I have lots of power than with the V6. I took one test drive of a QC having the V6/5-speed and would not have been happy with that choice. The window sticker showed only 1 MPG difference between the 3.9L V6 and 4.7L V8. That solidified my buying decision!

It all boils down to how agressive your throtle foot is. I don't feel this is crappy gas mileage for what I'm driving and how I drive it. You may feel differently if you've been used to something more along the lines of a 4-banger getting 30+ MPG (like my Jetta).

I went to my dealer to see what an LSD install would cost, etc. The guy there showed me the diagram of what would have to be replaced. The diff, ring & pinion, and if you have the ABS in the back, you have to take out some pin. Way too much for what I wanted. Yet I've seen lockers for sale a Ebay and the seller says it's a direct swap. I'm not so sure. Maybe the 3:55s are a special ratio.

By the way, ar you one of those, shall we say, intelligent people that use their 4x4, on dry pavement? Power braking? LOL, but then autos-LOL

Why does a computer, suddenly give people the right to abandon the english language-like punctuation? I have no problems with a misspelling, but c'mon folks, ever even heard of puntuation?

And rear ends? Theres a real fine one, works on the 18th floor. Everytime I see her it pops up past my belt and I hope it's behind my dress shirt, otherwise, hello one eyed soldier!

I was a little disappointed with the stock LSD too. I think one wheel spins a little to easy.

But it is a "limited slip" - not a "no slip"

There is no such thing as "no slip". All of the mwill slip some...it just depends on what kind of locker you have.
