Hello

I have been experiencing very harsh downshifting between 15-20 MPH when breaking. Doesn't do it everytime, but probably 90%. Took it to the dealership 3x. I had the tranny flushed the first time. Then they hooked it up to computer and it gave an unusual code so they reprogrammed it and said it was fixed. Today they had it all morning to run tests suggested by Chrysler and all they could come up with was to take the pan off and reseal the filters. Mechanic suspects my cell phone is causing the unusual computer code. I am not convinced. Any ideas?

does it sort of feel liek someone kicked the back of your seat when it does that? My 2000 dakota does that once ina blue moon. Dealer was never able to figure out why. Doesnt seem to hurt anything but it shouldnt do that.

It seems like it's more of a noise-a very loud clunking more than a jerk. It's very ovbious when it happens. The mechanic told me he used to see it a lot in the early 90s with minivans that had the same trannsmission but that he could never pinpoint what it was.Not very reassuring.
i've only noticed it when between 15-20 mph, but when we drove it with the computer on it, it was doing it everytime it shifted. The cell phone theory applies because he thinks that when I charge it in my truck it trips the computer.

Hate to tell ya but DC has never made a minivan with the 45RFE transmission. THe 45RFE trans has only been used in SUV's and Trucks so far from 1998 up! Their is no way your cell phone is causeing any problem. You cell phone only has an output power of 1/4 of a watt. Your truck cab acts a little like a farada cage except for the glass windows. Then you engine compartments acts like a partial faraday cage and to top it off you PCM is shielded and fully encolsed in aluminum. THe RF signal would have to find it's way into an unshielded wire running from your cab to your PCM. I just do not see a 1/4 watt of RF output doing that!!!! I have amature radio equipment in my truck and the output power is around 100 watts and have never had a problem. WHile your problem does not sound like anything too serious especialy if it is not frequent I think I would be pushing for a new PCM!!

If you replace the stock radio setup with a 50000 watt RF generator this would cause a 33k mfd drop in your output capacitive recharge value. This in turn will boost the overall signal to noise ratio of 95 db +/- 5 db to just over 1 trillion db signal to noise ratio. The trans will then shift better due to the increase in magnetic flux response. I hope this helps.

Get the 5spd. I can eat a hamburger, drink a Dr. Pepper, talk on the cell phone to a client, and drive my 5spd at the same time... it isn't hard... learn

Find another dealer. Some-one somewhere has to know the answer to this.

I heard all the same things on my 2000 5-spped, 4.7. Foirst year of the manual in a 4.7 and occasionally it will stall upon deceleration. Ultimately the problem is that there is no switch to detect the clutch being depressed. But my dealer tried new sensors, programs, etc... nothing made it 100% better.. so now I jsut keep it in either defrost or air conditioning on the heater (bumps up the idle) and never have a problem.

I would like to let everyone know that if they have problems with thier trucks while under warranty and the dealer fails to fix it properly; after the third try you truck could be covered by the lemon laws. I learned the hard way. I made many trips to the dealer to fix a sloppy transmission shift problem while the truck was still under the factory warranty. I was never fixed properly. Now with 65K on the the truck, the sloppy shift has grown to 2nd gear complety gone - slips like hell.
The result - the dealer says it will cost $2500.00 to fix it! What the @#$%^$#! Stick to your guns if you have a problem which is covered under warranty! Call the Chrysler Care number and pinch a fit! Or else....

I just got back from the 2nd visit with my local Dodge Dealer regarding the hard kick/shifting problem on my Dakota. It would kick the rear end, much like someone hit you from behind, between 1st, 2nd and third. Also, when decelerating after a shift into second (coming up to another traffic light) it would buck like being rear ended (much like others have described, inlcuding Jen).
The first time (2 days downtime), they replaced the entire valve body (after waiting for a shipment from Mich?). The truck still had the problems.
The second time they reprogrammed the PCM/TCM (per TSB 18-025-01), and initiated a "QUICKLEARN", and the problems have almost gone away.
I think the remaining problems (slight hard shifts, not bad) have to do with the hard shifts the computer put the drivetrain though while I had the problem. What do you guys think?

Jen, I would keep hounding your dealer, or take it to another dealer like recommended. There is plenty of stuff that can be done to these transmissions.

A Side note: I met one of the engineers responsible for building these trans, and the plant assembly equip, and he said, to put it mildy, save up some some money for that 70k mile mark!

i had a similar problem on my 00 dak 4.7 4x4 the tranny would shift hard into 2 from 1st and it seemed like down shifting from 4 to 3 it would have to high of a speed to downshift to that gear anyway long stroy short i took it to the dealer and put the the comp on it and it was the input and output speed sensor on the the tranny that went out and it costed $150 parts/labor and now i dont have any problems.

This is probably a stretch but, have you checked the fluid level
and color in this transmission? My understanding is, that is if
we're talking about an automatic transmission, is that the fluid
and filter/filters need to be changed at specified intervals
depending on mileage or age of the fluid. You might try doing
that first.
