I have an 02 cc R/T and just bought a boat. With the trailer the boat is about 2500lbs and I think the R/T towing capacity is only 1800lbs. I was told I should get air bags for the rear to increase my towing capacity. The guy at my local shop told me the airbags would be overkill and I should just get helper springs. Could you guys help me out and tell me which is better for me to get. Thanks guys.

First of all, if the r/t's don't already come with one...........
I'd DEFINITELY get a tranny cooler for it!

If not, the added heat does things like cook seals, boil the fluid, etc.

I"m no authority, maybe 'TrannyGuy' will chime in?

Seriously, ask around about that!

uh oh! I must be in trouble then. I pulled a tandom axle trailer with a saturn on it about 700 miles through the mountains @ 70-75 mph in od. Trailer is 2500 lbs and the saturn weighs 2200. Well, maybe not in that much trouble:) As long as your not putting it in the bed of the truck you'll be ok. Our trucks are torque monsters (360) and with the beefy tranny and diff. it's a good combo. pulling weight is ok it's the bed weight/brakes where we get in trouble. Stock bumper won't take much over 300 lbs so balence your load and have fun.

R/T's tow rating is 2000lbs, which is very conservative given DC's mixup with the older sales brochures which claimed a tow rating of ~6300lbs. Suspension wise, you should be safe up to ~ 4500lbs as long as you balance your trailer and don't bottom-out the rear suspension. If you do bottom out, you need air bags or the "Load Handler" helper springs (can't remember the exact name).

If you pull anything that drags wind, add a tranny cooler, it's cheap insurance. If not, at least start your trip w/ fresh tranny fluid and change often.

A lot of R/T's come with the tranny cooler from the factory. I ordered my first one that way. The one I have now doesn't have one, but will get one before summer. Might also put an oil cooler on it. As you said, cheap insurance.
