Subject: Make my 318 faster IP: Logged
Message: I have a 97 regular cab dakota sport. 5.2L 5 speed with
3.90 rear end. I have a homebrew intake, took off
everything past the cat, and BFG radial TA's 275-60-15.
My best time is a 15.6. Not bad for tires and an intake. I
ordered the Mopar PCM and it will be in this week.
Along with that I am getting a 360 crate (380 hp) cam
for my engine. I am wondering what kind of hp or tq will
I get with the PCM, and a cam. Also, after headers...
whats next for my truck. I was thinking about an ignition
system. any help is appreciated.
thanks

Message: If you get the crate motor cam you will require serious computer mods to run it. It's not really a streetable cam. Better off checking out www.krcperformance.com. They list their cams along with required mods to run them. Before the headers, you need more air IN the engine. Ope up the stock TB to 50mm (www.fast4x4.net "How to") or exchange for a Fastman 50mm ($250 + core). Then, the M1 2brl manifold, the cam, ignition, endless....

Message: The 380hp 360 motor's cam is P4876348 (288/292 duration, 108 centerline)
In the MP catalog it says," it will not fit prodution MPI engines. Use on Magnum crate engines and Magnum engines modified for use with mechanical fuel pumps and carb." Even if the cam would work with the electric fuel pump that the stock trucks use the 108 centerline wouldn't work with the stock or MP computer.
If you want a new cam you should look at comp cams, hughes engines, crower or crane cams. You might want to check out post: http://www.dodgedakota.net/boards/v8/2347.html
I was asking a lot of questions to guy that had the performance I wanted.

Message: Thanks for the info, both he and I were not sure about
the cam situation. I plan on porting my TB, since it's
basically free and can't hurt. The headers should help
out a lot with the exhaust, but for intaking air, Is there a
MAF for our trucks? I heard that the 180 degree t-stat
should help, as well as gutting the cat. I want to clear
the cat out, but don't want the check engine light (and
$100 for an O2 sim is alotta money for a damn light).
Any alternatives? Thanks for the help

Message: O2 Simm does more than make the light go out, it makes the computer think everything is fine. If the computer thinks something is wrong, it goes into 'limp home' mode and you loose a lot of performance/milage.
