Message: If he is telling you he can only do 16 in 1/4 he is playing you for a sucker. The 96 Impala SS has the LT1. It takes very little to trick the LT1 out. He is going to have better tractionout of the hole and more HP and torque. His torque curve is flater as well. He does not have a silly 89-105 MPH speed limiter to contend with either. If you extend it past 1/4 mile then he will also have a huge aerodynamic advantage. Think of the Impalla as a stretched Camaro that will seat the entire family!! Know the current pile of $HIT that is being passed off as an Impalla you could take anytime you like!!! Instead of bringing back a real car like the RWD Impalla SS Chevy's marketing idiots decided to cram a super charged 3.8 V6 into the epsilon platform and call it a FWD Impalla SS!! Way to go marketing idiots!!! Only people that hate cars could come up with this!! Their is really no need to even super charge it. The 3.2 and 3.4 used in the Cadillac CTS and CRX is 3.4L and makes more HP and TQ then the super charged 3.8 in the same power band and is less likely to fail??? It is all about execution and sometimes these hairbrained attempts to win market share just tick me off. If they did it right the first time they could save themselfs money, increase market share, develop brand loyalty and turn an even better profit!!!! WHat happen to car guys working for car company's????

Message: My wifes son has a impala SS. we messed around a few times. He usually takes me by 50-60 or so before that were somewhat even but I have 33s on my truck so mabey that is why I cant beat him. weight is pretty close cause the SS is a heavy car. if youre gonan race him remove your spare tire, tailgate and go on less than 1/4 tank. also get rid of the jack and tools and anythingin the tuck. that shoudl take off 100-180 pounds.
every little bit helps.
PS gas weighs 8 pounds a gallon so if you race him with 1/4 tank youre taking off abotu 120 pounds or so right off the bat. the spare and taolgate shoudl be goof ro 60-70 pounds and all the misc tools and stuff shoudl be good for 10 pounds or so.

Message: I have a 2002 CC R/T. My buddy at work has a 96 Impala SS. We talked smack back and forth for a while - all in good fun, nothing mean. We finally got around to running. At the time my truck was nearly all stock, and ran 15.4 consistanly at the track. He had never timed his car before. My truck weighs nearly 4400lbs, he claims his cars weighs around 4200+, and was bone stock with 60+K miles.
We lined up to race, I did a small burnout on the junky stock RSA's. I honked three times to signal go. He jumped a split second before I did. I nailed it too hard and spun pretty bad. He jumped out to my front bumper. I never could catch him, and by 80-90mph his back bumper was only about 10 feet ahead of my front bumper.
He won. :-(
I tried to get him to give me another run, but he wussed out and said "I'm gonna quit while I'm on top! Retire a champion!" LOL!
I think if I had hooked better, or ran him from a 20mph roll, the results would have been different.
He won't race me now that I've done the headers and mentioned the .6 second improvement! LOL!! With that alone I believe he would loose.

Message: So it can be done, I just have to hook up w/o spinning. His SS probably weighs about the same cause they are heavy cars, but like mentioned earlier the have lots of tourqe and H.P. so he could pull away. Then again with the mods i have it might give me a chance. Its all fun but he just talks crap about Daks so i would like him to see other wise.

Message: Talking smack changes things a bit. Why don't you make it a race in your favor. You should both hook up to 3000-6000lbs worth of trailer and then race!!! or load salt bags into his vechile equalying 1500 lbs and the same in your bed then run? You should win! First it will give you move traction. Secound you have lower gearing witch will make up for the lower HP and Torque and your transmission has two second gears to choose from he has one! It is really sad that he has to compare a car to your truck. That is like compareing a fighter plane to a cargo plane. The Impalas were nice cars. The 1996 Impala was the last Chevrolet that I wanted to own and would still like to own. I will never own a Chevrolet until they go back to makeing an afordable rwd family sedan. The possable exception would be something for my wife and family if I get a good deal on a used sedan. The bigest mistake that GM ever made was doing away with RWD platforms for their family sedans and luxury cars!!!!

Message: Hey thanks for the advice, I like the chevy ss its just that he is a jerk. I did hear the new impala will be redesigned to a v8 w/ rear wheel drive along with the Intrepid. There is a big push for them in the public and law enforcement.

Message: For those of you with 4X4's looking for an edge in a race, put your t-case in 4 high at the light. I have done this several times and have never been left at a light just spinning my tires. Then, as you are shifting into second, push the lever back to 2wd. Also, if you want to make sure you are getting every bit of power to your wheels, turn off everything you don't absolutely need. The radio, headlights, blower, etc., all put strain on the alternator which sucks up HP. Happy racing!

Message: Incorect the 2004 Impalla is based on the epsilon platform and is fwd. The SS Impala for 2004 will be getting a supercharged 3.8V6. The Bonevile GTP will also stay fwd but it will be getting a 4.4L NorthStar V8. GM will be offering a SS deriviative of almost everything they offer buy 2004 or 2005 model year! I would not mind this is engineering had the final say in all matter of powertrain and suspension but I am sure that marketing will tie both hands behind engineering back and force comprimised piles of junk with all kinds of special paint and content on the public as usual!!!
