Subject: 4.7 HO parts to swap IP: Logged
Message: Has anyone looked into upgrading their regular 4.7's with the 4.7 HO parts? Are the only differences different pistons, different crank, different cams, different PCM? How much would it cost if possible?

Message: I looked into this! Went to the local Jeep dealer to talk parts and basically what it comes down to is spend $4,000.00 to do this. Its probably cheaper to buy the engine as a whole, I looked on the sticker of a jeep that had it and it was like a $1,800.00 option. I was going to do it cause im in a Automotive program at tech college and I thought it would be a good way to get into an engine, not for 4,000 g's though. Everything is sold Seperatly, no "package" to get the parts.

Message: pistons cams and PCM are all you really need the forged crank is for strenght no HP. I will wait for aftermarket cams and a custom PCM worth more HP, cheaper to.

Message: I would not bother with the crank at all,Ive never had a crank fail in all the engines I`ve ever built and I`ve built some stout 360`s,I just always deburr and chamfer all the sharp edges and are you sure the pistons and the heads and valve springs are the same?

Message: The stroke is the same. FYI the bearings for the forged crank are different as well. Forget the forged crank don't need it and costs lots of money. Duners crank is doing fine under 400+ hp. Wait for the aftermarket cams they will be better if not cheaper.

Message: I think Stewart is pulling your chains. You can't just drop a Jeep Grand Cherokee PCM in a Dakota can you? And one of the biggest things that make the HO is the higher compression, ya better order those pistons.
The base price difference between a regular 4.7 and the HO on the Jeep is actually over $2600 on the MSRP but the HO comes standard with more stuff then the regular 4.7 limited does. To bad you can't get a stripped down version with the HO, in a 2wd jeep it might be pretty fast and affordable. As it stands, the lowest possible 4.7 HO jeep comes in at $33,350 MSRP, ouch! Compared to a 2002 Dakota Quad cab, Sport plus, with the 4.7 is only $23,350 MSRP. That's exactly a $10000 difference! For a truck with the same basic layout and passenger capability as the Jeep, and similar performance. The Jeep has tons more goodies at that price but even the most loaded out 4x4 Dakota is only a bit over $32,000 MSRP. I like Jeeps, but they don't have the value the Dakota has. If you want the best factory made 4x4's (maybe short of expensive, oversized Hummers) Jeep is your company.

Message: As far as MSRP goes, in this case both the Jeep and Dakota have similar rebates and availability so MSRP is a good way to compare the prices. This doesn't work when comparing the Dodge to something like a Toyota as Toyota and Honda will limit their production to create a seeming demand, therefore they don't usually have rebates. Actually the Jeeps may not have rebates now as they have lowered the MSRP across the board on 2002s, so in reality the price difference between a Jeep and a Dodge may be even greater yet.

Message: It was my understanding that the 4.7 HO would also have different heads. The small exhaust valve and the closed down bowl behind the valve is a limiting factor on the performance potential of the stock 4.7 head. Once some of these 4.7 heads are "worked over" we'll see a whole new level of performance out of them. Maybe the 4.7 HO heads have some of this done already? I also thought that the intake manifold was different between the two, with the HO having shorter runners.
Anyone with access to parts numbers and databases want to check for these?
p/n for Dakota 4.7 heads vs Jeep 4.7 HO heads
p/n for Dakota 4.7 exhaust valves vs 4.7 HO exhaust valves
p/n for Dakota 4.7 intake valves vs 4.7 HO intake valves
valve springs and rocker arms?

Message: Hersbird your right you can't put a jeep PCM in a dodge but we can set it up for the stock overland HO and pull the codes from it,Got to start from some point,The pistons are dome and were still waiting for them with the pins and rings as for the crank in going to use the stock 4.7 crank can't get the damper for the HO crank it's internal balance, for the heads Marty ar KRC will do them along with headers,Talked to B&G in Warren today about a custom flash for the engine and he can do it in three months by that time I may have all the parts,Next we work on the Trans!

Message: Are you sure those pistons will work with the stock 4.7 head. They probably changes the combustion chamber shape as well as port design.

Message: Joe - allow me to ask you why too. Why did you dredge up this 2 year old post when it is now common knowledge that most of the torque gain of the HO can be had by just changing the cams ?
