Message: I like the technology of the 4.7L, but still not impressed with it's gas mileage (as goes with ANY of the dodge engines). However, new 4.7L HO looks promising.
Of course, doesn't the 4.7L save a few hundred pounds over the 5.9L? If so, it's performance isn't all that impressive.
BTW, i own a '00 R/T.

Message: Hahahaha.... Eric. You really think so? You are entitled to your opinion but there were about 75-80 R/Ts in Topeka that proved otherwise. And to top it off.... my cat was partially plugged on that trip to Topeka. A dyno run after the cat was replaced showed a 75 hp difference above 5000 rpm. Hmmmm, I wonder how I would have done with an extra 75 hp in Topeka?
There's a bunch of guys here in the Phoenix area that know better also. At the track 3 weeks ago, I raced a '99 R/T with headers, hi-flow cat, custom dual exhaust cat-back system, ported throttle body, Gen II K&N intake, Mopar PCM and 1.7 rockers. He went 15.0s and I went 14.80s. That was with a density altitude of 4200' (hot and humid). The air density correction back to sea-level would put my truck running 14.10s if I could get it to someplace like SIR or Cecil. I'm still not sure why you think "twisting the knife" is necessary.
Notice that I never say that one engine is better than the other. After all.... they're just air pumps.
Why would anybody make a statement that one engine will always beat the other? You know full well that it's not that way. You guys have no idea how much hp and torque is bottled up in the stock pcm on a 4.7. If you did, you wouldn't talk the way you do now. I'm not here to dog any engine. I just want you to know that some people don't know what they are talking about when they say the 5.9 will always whip a 4.7. There are tons of 5.9s that will whip my 4.7. But the same can be said the other way also. What's so difficult for everyone to understand?

Message: Having both a 4.7 and a 5.2 I can tell you that the 4.7 has more useable power on the street. The weight difference from the 4.7 to the 5.9 is only 75 lbs. The 4.7 is a quicker reving engine.
If you need torque the 5.9 is still king even though the power difference from the 4.7 is not that gtreat torque is.
Which engine is right? It all depends on your needs. With the 4.7 and the 5.2 I have it preet good. They are both good engines. Over the years I have had many 5.2s (318 ci) and they all have been good. So far my 4.7 is doing okay even though I don't even have 6000 miles on it yet.
Oh, and both are bone stock.

Message: Well I have to vote 5.9. The 5.2 is off a little from the factory compared to a 4.7 but I think it has more bang for the buck potential as well. As far as bang for the buck goes you can't beat a Gen II, 5.2, 5-speed, 3.92 LS. All you have to do is put better rubber on the back, drop the exhaust past the cat, put in the MP pcm, and cold air kit, and lose some extra stuff like the bumper, spair, and tailgate and I'm sure you could run low 14's. My 93 Auto 3.55 5.2 ran 14.9@92 ith big traction problems as I had those mods but no sticky tires. The tires and 3.92s would have put me about 14.7 and the 5-speed with a high rpm launch would have to be good for another .5 or so. That's like $500 worth of mods on an already inexpensive truck. Personally I also feel my 5.9 is about $500 away from low 14's with those kind of mods as well but I'm not even close to a trak anymore to find out. Would you all consider G-tech times adequate? If so I'll try that but I will be hurt with the 3000 ft elevation here.

Message: Well I have had the opportunity to drive both the 5.2 (mine) and the 4.7 (a friends). mine, a 97, has 3in. Mopar cat back exhaust, high flow cat, K&N FIPK 2,Black Magic electric fan, FMS 19# injectors and a 5 speed. His, a 2000, has a Pro Dyno 3 in. exhaust and a Pro Dyno cold air intake and an automatic. I gotta say that on the old "butt dyno" they feel REALLY close. mine seems to faster in some situations and his seems to be faster in some situations. He drove mine also and came to the same conclusion (even though he had trouble getting the 5 speed down... rookie). I will say that the 4.7 does run smoother and better at the higher RPM's. In the long run THEY ARE BOTH GREAT!!
4.7, 5.2, 5.9 ... all different, all great!!!

Message: I have never driven a 5.9, but have driven a 5.2. The 5.2 seemed like a dog compared to my 4.7. The 5.9 has such a lrge displacement, but no hp. Torque is what moves a truck, but I don't see diesels with 450 ft-lbs of torque going low 15's in the quarter. If it can't wind up, you ain't get'n no where. As for fuel economy 15-20 beats 13-17. Towing, my 4.7 with a 3.55 and tow package is rated to tow 7500lbs with a 3.92 10000lbs. That is quite substantial. Even if someone were to tow this much, they would never be able to stop it with the crappy mopar brakes.
I think who ever made the statement of the 4.7 being only 75lbs lighter than the 5.9 needs to check thier records. The 5.9 has iron hears and aluminum intake. 4.7's have aluminum heads and composite intakes. Aluminum is about 66% lighter than iron, and with a smaller displacement (about 90 cubes) there is less piston and crank to wiegh the mouse down.
Just my two cents.

Message: I'm not sure aluminum heads would save more then 75#, I'm sure a set of cast iron 360 heads weigh less then 75# and the aluminum ones still weigh something. It would more depend on what each truck is equiped with. The 4.7 is a smaller block (which is one reason why it's only a 4.7) so that would save more weight. All other options being equal I bet the 4.7 is only 75-100# lighter, if it's the old 5-speed -vs- automatic game then the 4.7 may be almost 200# lighter, especially if the 4.7 has the 15" wheels -vs- the 17" R/T ones.

Message: You're on to something there Hersbird.....
My 4.7 with the R/T wheels and 17" tires has grown in weight. It's now at 4320 lbs. The 4.7 engine is actually physically larger than the 5.2 and 5.9s. If you look at it in the engine bay of a Dakota.... it looks to be the size of a 383 or 440. I seriously doubt there is much if any weight advantage to the 4.7 when it comes to the actual engine.
Just re-reading my post.... I'll have to weigh my truck once again with the added weight of the turbo and the other related parts. It might have gained even more weight....

(This is NOT to say the 5.2/9 is not.) After reading the specs on the engine (got the URL from somewhere on this site), the 4.7 certainly has some 'cool factor' going for it. It will be very interesting to see what kinds of radical mods will be available for it in the future.

and a rc 2wd 4.7L w/3.92's who do you think's gonna win (I'm talking stock) and if you say the 5.9L you need to get a room with the thing
Duner the reason for the 4.7L "looking" bigger is because of the cams are inside of the heads. look at any motor with the cams inside the head makes it look hudge, take a look at the 4.6L cobra motor d@mn thing looks like a big block but that's because it's got 2 cams in each head.
