Message: I know a guy with a old Dodge Ram that races at the track with me ( my truck does 13.5's ) that is currently running 11.7's and it is his daily work truck. He runs a modified 340 and nitrous. I would bet you couldn't even think of racing that truck. How fast do you run anyway? Can you even keep up with my old 160K mile 5.2 93 CC Dak at 13.5's? I know of several dodge street trucks that run faster than me but so far i haven't been taken out by a 97 chevy yet. My cousin has a 99 Silverado with a supercharger and the works and he runs 13.7's on slicks ( i don't run slicks YET).

Why do you need nitrous? I'll tell you why because your truck would be nothing without it. Nitrous is a mod for boys who don't really have anything but wanna make them fast. If I would run nitrous I would be running 12's all day long but I don't want nitrous, I want REAL POWER

Message: Real power? Your dang right, nitrous IS real power. Not only that, it has the best power to price ratio of any aftermarket performance boosting product on the market. That's starts looking real good to college kids like me. $500 + shipping is real good compared to a $3000 (minimum) supercharger or $2000 worth of N/A tuneups. After I graduate as an engineer then I'll start bolting Real power, as you call it. But if $500 gets me 150HP, then i'll see you at the track with your $2000 worth of N/A tuneups that gives you 100HP.

Message: Robert....just to let you know about my truck....it has 160K on a stock 318 ( 5.2 magnum) i am running nitrous to see how much it will take before giving up. I already have a total replacement drivetrain waiting to be installed when it blows. I have a 408cid stroker magnum, fully prepped race 727 trans, 8 3/4 rear with 4:10 gears, and 250hp nitrous setup. As for real power...i wont need nitrous to run 12's with the replacement powertrain, but since i built the engine to handle nitrous i will have fun in the low 11's!!!! But i am going to see if my stock 5.2 will make it into the 12's on nitrous before giving up just for fun.

Message: Did anyone read the article about the 5.9L R/t RC Dak vs. the 4.7L RC Dak? I believe it was Mopar Action. They did six 1/4 mile runs on a brand new unmodified 4.7L Dak and a brand new 5.9L R/T. The 4.7L won all six matches! They were both automatics. It's already been documented that the 5speed manual 4.7L will kick the R/T's butt. Now it's been documented that the automatic will kick the R/T's butt.

Message: Just an observation that I have made over the last couple of days... The last time I was on the road for work a month ago I had a rental Ram 1500 QC with the 5.9 and it was what I had expected for a pick up- no major complaints. Just over the last 4 days I have had the same truck with the 4.7 and I must say I am pretty unimpressed with the power for the size of the truck. It was really quite pathetic. Don't get me wrong I AM a diehard Dodge guy but the 4.7 is a waste in the full size. So it raises the question.. is the 4.7 faster or more powerful? Not by a long shot just my 2 bits.

Message: I agree, it was a mistake to put it into the full size, go drive a RC 4.7 5spd and go drive a RC R/T and then tell us something. Nobody ever said the 4.7 made more power, it doesn't and obviously doesn't produce as much torque either...something very important as vehicle weight increases. The 4.7 weighs less and produces more hp per liter than the 5.9...thats all I'm saying, its a much more efficient motor and can hold its own in the dakotas.

Message: You must admit the 5 speed will make ALL the diff in the world as far as racing will go. We all know that. But the thing is all the hype I hear about the 4.7 being faster and the 4.7-5.9 bashing back and forth, which is quite senseless I might add. But if you look at the internals and the heads(Aluminum) as I am sure you are well aware they are more performance orientated in the 4.7 as compared to the 5.9. The 4.7 is a great engine and is WAY more technologically advanced than the 5.9 so if it has a few more ponies per litre than the 5.9 big deal it still doesn't have the power nor the TQ of the old 5.9 with the extra goodies and there is nothing to special about the 5.9 internals and no aluminum heads. Now I can't say that I have raced a five speed but the three auto 4.7's I raced were scalded fairly convincingly so to me that tells me that the 5.9 is the faster more powerful engine. I know you all have heard it before but WHAT IF the R/T had the 5-speed ? REALLY ? And yes 2 of the 3 4.7's I raced were 3:92 rear end and it couldn't have been any more fair. I'm not hear to bash the 4.7 I just feel it isn't quite what everyone claims it to be. And if the stock 5.9 kicks the stock 4.7 hard in a RAM the diff in the Dakota is ?.... oh yeah 5 gears.

My new Dak is also my family car. No more Mustang for me for a long time, (as my woman says). I'm very happy with the way mine sounded after I installed the Flowmaster so at least it may curb my craving for a Rod for a while. I have no complaints with the 4.7 so far. It sounds very nice for a truck and a mostly stock exhaust.
Someone mentioned having a govenor by pass??? Whatwas involved in doing that mod? I got mine to 110 the other day coming down I17. I left a stock Honda Civic behind when going up the larger hills, and I OUT CORNERED IT around the curves at higher speeds, so that made me happy to at least be able to do that. But Honda Civic's are known to suck at high speed cornering anyway, so that's no big deal. But my truck is a 4X4.

Message: I've owned two Dakotas, both 5-speeds and all stock. The first was a '98 5.2L club cab, and I just bought a 4.7L quad cab. I've only owned the club cab for 3 days, and very regretfully, I miss my 5.2L. :^( It had a gorgeous throaty rumble and rocked when I punched it...instant power. I used to have to feather the clutch to keep from smoking the tires in first, and could chirp them at 50mph. I could burn away from damn near anything at a stoplight, and if I'd keep it over 2500rpm on the backroads, it was just unreal. The seats sat low (almost sportcarry-ish), and I had no trouble skating it through tight left-right corners.
The 4.7L sounds like a...well, like my neighbor's Grand Cherokee. It wants to comparitively puke pulling out in first and early into second, but once I'm over 3500 rpms, it pours it on. I hit the rev limiter around 5900 rpm at 39mph in 1st, and had it to 95mph in 3rd with rpm's to spare. I think in the higher-end speeds (highway) it would blow my 5.2L away. But my 5.2L would dissappear out of sight on backroads (where "I" like to have fun). I hate how it has to rev so high to get power. That "power range" is so far above normal driving range that I have to really work to get power when I want it...no more instantaneous rocket. Needless to say, lighting up the tires is no longer a problem.
Also, the engine is such that I can't keep the truck in a lower gear in traffic to rely on slowing down under throttle lift. The 5.2L would accellerate/slow beautifully in traffic if I left it in the next lowest gear. Downshifting in the 4.7L barely slows it at all...as if every gear is the same. Pisses me off since that's one thing I really like about a stick shift. Finally, the seats of my quad cab also sit higher than my club cab and makes it feel top heavy in turns. I've been afraid to slide it loose through turns...if I "can" even slide it loose.
I don't know if the club cab running on 31 x 10.5 tires had anything to do with it's performance over the quad cab running on stock 265's...but I doubt it.
For a family vehicle, we needed a truck with 4-doors, and I'm very pleased with it in that aspect. I also like how it seems to get a 2-3 mpg increase in fuel economy (14.8 and 16.3 mpg vs. 13 mpg). The steering is nice and tight too, unlike the sloppiness in my club cab. I can't rail on it too bad since it still is fast for a truck and doesn't buck/kick/want to stall when I pull away from the curb in the morning. But on my commute to work, I do miss my 5.2.
