I would love to put one in my 2002. I hate the stock shifter and boot. The throws are too long and it looks like crap.

I just ordered a 2002 Dakota QC 4.7 4x4 auto 3.55LS after test driving, 1)2002 RAM 1500 QC 4.7 4x4, 2)'99 Dakota CC 5.2 auto, and 3) the 2002 Dakota QC like I ordered. I have a '98 Dakota Reg. cab 3.9 auto. Here are my impressions. The RAM with the 4.7 was a dog. Beautiful truck, but underpowered. The '99 5.2 was very fast and compared to my 3.9 had plenty of power. The 4.7 Dakota QC, however seemed to have more immediate throttle response compared to the 5.2. The output of the 4.7 and 5.2 are very similar except the 4.7 deliveres it slightly quicker with less noise. When you floor the 5.2 it makes a loud roar and goes. With the 4.7, it just goes. I never drove a 5.9, so I have no opinion. But, my sister has it in a 2000 RAM 4x4 and loves it. The 4.7 is not up to pushing the RAM around, that is why I bought the Dakota. The same engine in the Dakota, however, is great. It drives effortlessly with easy power. http://dodgeram.org/tech/gas/Cammer/4_7_v8.html Read the tech article at this site about the 4.7. I was impressed with the design and engineering. The bottom end is unlike any other domestic V8. Should hold up well past the 7year/100,00 mile powertrain warranty that they are currently adding at no extra charge. That new RAM is awesome, though, despite the engine. So, maybe in a few years when they put that hemi in it...

The Hurst shifter for 2000 model 4.7 dakotas part #391-0155 will not fit a 2001-02. I contacted hurst on 02/01/02 and asked an approximate arrival date on the new shifter. They say check back in June or July.

Never driven a 5.2 so nothing to input about it... but i have rode in my buddies 4.7 auto, in comparison to my R/T... I can tell pretty easily that mine has more pull... However thats the auto not the 5-speed and from what Iv heard as far as that goes is they run about neck and neck. I prefer my 5.9 over the 4.7 only because I guess pride in owning my very own, something, vs something else is how I figured.

Before I made my purchase ,I tested the 02 QCs 4X4s with the 4.7 and 5.;9 automatics. I also tested the new 1500 Ram with 4.7 2X4.(at that time the 4x4s were not avail). One thing I did notice was a smooth quik accell and high rpm shifts with the 4.7 Dak. The Ram felt about the same, but the brakes are what really impressed me. Now the 5.9 Dak I believe is more of a torqier animal. The take off pulls you into the seat and shifts slightly different at lower rpms. I opted for the 5.9 Dak, due to the fact that I plan on hualing a travel trailer. If you do not intend on hauling and are concerned with mpg, then stick with the 4.7.

I have leased both the 5.2 (1999) , and now the 4.7 (2002) in the Durrango. (Both are the wifes)

There is no comparison. The 4.7 blows away the 5.2. That is in the stock form I don't know what they would run like with modifications. The 4.7 revs higher is more responsive off the line gets better gas milage, there is just no comparison.

I also have the 4.7 in my Dakota and it is a great Motor. I drove the 5.9 at the dealership and it is strong but I wanted the 5spd and the 4.7 was the only option. I am very satisfied with my 4.7 I just wish they made more performance mods for the 4.7.

You would have to have your head examine if you think 4.7/5.2 could take a 5.9L.
I own 2000 quad 4x4 5.9 and have drove and road
in all other sizes they dont compare.
If there was mopar wouldnt make all these sizes.
I like to drive fast and no matter what pulls up along the side of me its a race.
And most sports cars cant beat this truck, and there's no way my buddys 4.7 5 spd can.
Not on take off and not on the end.
But now he drives a half 4x4 4dr with the hemi
and we stay right there at first but then hes gone. So this is what i know for fact. with no mods.

I have an 02 cc auto 4.7l, and I raced a guy with a 01 RT 5.9l. We were dead even from start to finish. I bought my truck brand new, and there are no mods on it, other than a flowmaster exhaust, but that doesn't qualify as a mod to me. I thought for sure he would blow right by me, but he stayed right next to me the whole time. I didn't say I beat him, but he sure wasn't pulling away from me.

No engine is better at everything.
However, each has it own qualities that each owner prefers when purchasing a vehicle.

For instance, the 4.7L has a good power curve, best of all three perhaps. But as for torque, the 5.9 tears it up. Yes, the 4.7L revs quicker, but the 5.9 starts making power before the 4.7, which is why any 5.9 has a hard time hooking up at the track.

And just for consideration, do you think that maybe Dodge toned down the R/T a little bit so that it wouldn't be so awfully terrible on gas? I mean, seriously, if you can bolt on an intake manifold (the M1) and dramatically shift the power curve to gain 40HP on the top end, then don't you think that DC is trying to keep the R/T toned down? A few N/A performance mods can easily get the the 5.9 above 300RWHP (Intake & Exhaust manifold, ignition, PCM, throttle body, head porting, cam, rockers).

I personally don't think the R/T should be called an R/T. It's only got half the horspower as the SRT-10 and viper which are DC's real performance bunch.

Maybe Dodge will produce a Dakota SRT series truck with a blown 5.7 Hemi and 6sp. Hmmm, interesting anyway.

So, go out and buy whatever engine you want, do what you want to it. But do know that as of RIGHT NOW, the 5.2/5.9's have more performance mods available and therefore with an equal amount of available funds for aftermarket performance, the "old" V8's will outperform the 4.7's. That's just a matter of science, the engine after all is a bomb container than converts the explosive energy to kinetic motion. The more efficiently one does this (Honda civic, for ex [not that i like civics]) or the bigger the explosion is (hellaciously Turbo'd engine and/or sprayed) or the bigger the pistons are and the more cylinders they have (cadillac V16 comes to mind [1000HP]) make more power.
That being said, I own a 5.2 and like it just so that I won't be in the majority of ppl that own a 4.7 or 5.9. Furthermore, i want to have it bored/stroked to bring it's displacement up to 390ci. Then i want to put a 6sp in there to get better gas mileage, like a 6sp vette for example (how can you not like corvettes) that gets (supposedly) 28mpg on the highway b/c of it's extremely tall 6th gear? All b/c i don't want to be in the 4.7 v 5.9 debate.

My 2sense worth of a novel.

My old '92 5.2 RC 3:55 auto felt marginally stronger than my current '01 RC 4.7 3:92 5-speed. Both had K&N drop-ins and Flowmaster cat-back duals. The '92 was over 300 pounds lighter and had the 25-hp MP computer, however. Horsepower-to-weight ratio is where its at, something that holds the R/T back.
