Well of course. The reason it looks bigger is because it's actually taking up more room..... which means that the physical dimensions of the outside of the engine are bigger. If you get a chance - measure the outside to outside dimensions of a 5.9 vs a 4.7. After comparing the two.... it would be much easier to add a turbo to a 5.9 engine.

The 4.7 and 5.2 are for the typical city truck drivers and the people the put snowmobiles and recreational stuff. The 5.9 is for heavy towing.

The 5.9 is for the %1.

But dont tell me the 4.7 has more usable power. Ive been in both, both equiped with auto trannys and the 4.7 was gutless and felt week compaired the the 5.9. Sure it was smooth but line em up at a light and its the 5.9 any day of the week.

You put the 5 speed in and its a diffrent story but were not talking about trannys are we.

When I said the 4.7 has more useable power I was comparing to the 5.2 not the 5.9.

The 4.7 and 5.2 are real close in specs and it is the 4.7s higher and quicker reving that makes it more useable IMO than the 5.2. Remember I am talking bone stock.

The 5.9 is the torquer of the bunch but it is still only a small block. If you really want power, swap in an old B or RB engine. I would say a warmed over 440 will shoot just about anything else down. THAT is a torquemeister!

The 5.9 needs to be more competetive to the 5.3 and 6.0 of the Chevy's. Hell the old vortech 5.7 has more power than the modern mag 5.9. The base V-8 in the Dak should be a 4.7 with the R/T having a ballsier 5.9 or the experimental 5.7 Hemi. The R/T should be competitive with that of the Lightning. Then there will be no question of wich is better. It will be do you have an R/T or not?

Well Duner you may only be talking about 1 demension being bigger on the 4.7, the width. The height and length of the 5.9 may be bigger which would make the 5.9 bigger overall. I guess I need to break out a tape measure...

Well I took some quick measurements. From the edge of each exhaust manifold the 5.9 is about 25.5 inches wide. It is 20 inches from the rear of the distributer to the front of the block and 26" total to the front of the pullies. It is about 26" tall as well from the bottom of the pan to the top of the TB not counting the air horn. Pretty much 26x26x26. Hard to say exactly how big the block is with all the accessories in the way.

I have to go with the 5.2 with a 5-speed. On paper it looks the same as the 4.7, but there is something lacking in the smaller. For all it is worth, Dodge should make a real R/T and mate some form of a manual tranny with the 5.9...come on, it is a beautiful motor and that trans mated with it makes the R/T a sluggish turd.

The R/T is still by far, faster then most other trucks out there. I don't see any Nissans, Toyotas, Mazda, Chevys or F-150s out there blowing my doors off. I think the R/T is in the top 10% of fast trucks.

Of course it could never be faster then the mighty 4.7 or 5.2, so you say.....

Didn't the 454 also have a 3 speed transmission? Chevrolet made that 454 engine for a long time after that truck went out, but it was always used for towing not speed. I think the 350s and the newer small V-8s are still better in speed compared to the 454.

The lightining is also a $35,000 truck. For that price you could buy or make any car/truck really fast.

Or

My chevy 6.0 silverado can beet a dakota. Doesnt mention it was a stock 3.9L

They sound so dumb.

The other day i went on a chevy form for camaros and this one guy who likes dodge told everyone why dodges are better using facts that are availabe. No one could say anything. Some people were even talking about some of there old dodges.

BUT i know why there like that. Everyday they come here to this sight and read some of our race runs. And success storys and they feel like crap about buying a chev. Then as there driving it the fan motor makes ticking and the interior is craking and civics are blowing them away so they have to constently make fun.

Lets get some stories straight here.

1st The Ford has a 5.4 not a 5.3, that is Chevy.

2nd A 5-speed 4.7 (stock regular cab) will beat a 5.9 (stock regular cab) in the quater and from a light, as long as both have the same rearend gears. Weight playing a major role in this.(FACT)

3rd Anyone who wants to modify or make their vehicle better all power to them, but lets get some ducks in a row here. There are few laws that apply to fast cars, weight and horsepower. So anyone pulling up to you with a 2000lb car make 2-300 horsepower is probably going to kick your ass..nothing you can do about it..

That is all.

he11 i think the 5.2 with a 5speed will beat a 5.9 auto, with same gear and body style.

i think 99% know about the power to weight ratio thing, but thanks.

Let me tell you this.. With 3700 miles on the odo, bone stock, and half a tank of gas, I clicked off 14.4@94 consistently. It was 73 degrees, btw. Oh yeah; this is a 00' R/T RC. It's all in the launch. The 5.9 is almost impossible to launch at the track on street tires. But I guarantee you, if it hooks up perfectly from a dead stop, a 5.9 R/T will EAT any other Dakota. That is why it is the R/T; The fastest, best handling Dakota you can buy from the showroom. If the 4.7 was faster, it would be in the R/T. I'm tired of this debate. It is old. If you have a 4.7 stock in any configuration, (stick or auto)I will beat you. Not to sound like an idiot, but the 4.7 is 2nd to the 5.9. Nuff said.

Yeah friggin right. My Sears lawnmower runs 14.40's on a 75 shot of Nitrous.

If the 5.9's would have come with the 5-spd, I'd have one. I have driven all three. The torque of a 360 Rocks till about 3,500rpm, after that.........
The 318 with the 5-spd Rocks too. That's actually the truck I got hooked on. My brother-in-law's 95 sport CC. He had headers, chip, duals. It would roll.
The 4.7 kind of feels weak down low sometimes, but when 2,700-2,800rpm hits, it starts feeling like it's turbo'd.

Keep it sane people, it's the SAME truck we're talking about here.

I Own a 4.7 CC 5spd let me say it hauls ass. I don't own a 5.2 or a 5.9 and never have, so I, just as most of you others have no clue on these other powerplants. I know all beat the hell out of the non-dodge competition in their class, hey they are V-8s.

I personaly feel that the R/T is a bit lacking in Performance numbers. No way should a 360 ci have only 15 hp and 50 f/lbs of torque on an engine with almost 100 ci less.

I like the R/T even given this fact, its stance and look is unrivaled in the sport truck feild, (yes even the lightning)I have even went on to use some of its styling cues on my truck (Flares, and body colored top-half bumper)

I know my truck in the 4 door version with auto tranny does 0-60 faster than the R/T. But the R/T nips the quad cabs 15.8 E/T with a 15.4 in the regular cab version of the R/T(Motortrend). Yes I don't have the proper numbers for my 4.7L spd Rwd CC but there is no way a regular model of any make should be even close to the performance of the socal (Factory Hopped up) model.

I want the R/T to smoke my truck out of the show room. It is supposed to be that way. It is time for dodge to make the R/T the distant spec in the distance of the Lightning, the way it should have always been

As for the 5.2, well I guess you can use it to make fun of your Mustang 5.0L buddies, Mines bigger!

Let me have it,

Erik

Why would a 14.4 be unrealistic on a stock RC R/T. I've seen numbers like this before, even with CC's (remember Duners? R/T) I've seen magazine tests of fresh motor CC R/T's in humid Florida weather run 15.1 (HIgh Performance Mopar Sept 98). It seems the RC are usually .3 faster so if they would have had a RC that day they probably could have ran a 14.8 on a pure stock, unbroken in R/T in crappy weather. Better weather and a broken in moter should be good for mid 14's and some R/Ter's have achieved this. Most R/T guys don't wait that long before they start putting on mods though so this throws a wrench into things. Some mods I really feel don't help much, or aren't put together with other needed mods to make them effective. Many owners are just throwing the latest thing at their truck wishing for the best. I dropped a second off my 93's times with about $500 in mods (15.9 stock to 14.9 modded). Of course these things can be done to any motor but I honestly think the fastest trucks in pure stock form ever from Dodge are the R/T's. Some 4.7 5-speed combos are faster then some R/T's but the very fastest of the stock R/T's are faster then the very fastest stock 4.7 and 5.2's.
