haven't heard of this on dakotas, but heard GM had problems with it. I've seen a couple GM dipsticks that had locks on them. it was a hinged piece that in order to pull it out you would just flip the top up then it would be unlocked. you could see if maybe they have one the length you need.

Yes, I noticed this same thing after my dealer completed the transmission service at 30K.
Is this cause for concern? Is there a quick fix?

I noticed this on mine too. I did to transmission service myself and I have been wondering if I screwed up. At least now I know I am not the only one.
