Message: Hello, I have a 2002 quad cab 4x4 4.7 auto. I have no probs, sounds like your battery is weak or fuel pump is weak on fuel preassure. You should run it into the Dealer and have them work on warranty. I really dont think it is the ignition switch. or starter.

Message: Hi Theresa,
I just took my 2001 Quad Cab in to have that
exact issue looked at.
I told them that it seemed to take "a while" for
the engine to start. Somtimes 2 or 3 tries.
They said that it was in spec.
I have a 7/75 warranty, so they have to deal
with me for 7 years or 75,000 miles. Let me
know if you hear of anything.

Message: Teresa,
When you turn the key, Does it start to turn over RIGHT AWAY and then take 5-10 seconds of turning until it starts up (if so, then its NOT the switch, nor the battery or starter)
Or do you turn the key to the start position and nothing happens for 5-10 seconds, THEN it starts to turn over (in which case, it 'could' be a faulty switch or wiring)
Please clarify...

Message: This happened to me twice. Most likely the fuel pump. I had to replace mine twice. They redesigned them this year because of a bad record in the last three.
The only way to properly check it is to have a manual guage put on the fuel rail under the hood because the computer doesn't flag low pressure unless it's no pressure.

Message: I have a 2000 Quad cab and am having the same problem. Although my truck will always turn over it just wont start at times. The engine light will go on and off. Only once have I had to leave it sitting. Problem is it will do this then once I get it started it might not do this for a month. Just wondering does anyone know if there is a fuel filter? or is it also located in the fuel tank?

Message: Yes there are two filters in the tank I believe. Kinda like concentric filters that go around the pump. They're pretty massive. If they get clogged over the life of your truck, you have bigger problems, lol. Mine got junked up once because someone put about 5 gallons of gravel and a dozen eggs down my fuel filter line. Unless that happened to you, filter's not the problem. If you have the original fuel pump, depending on your milage, it may be going bad. Have a guage stuck on your fuel rail and have the pressure checked.

Message: I have a 2000 Q/C 5.9 and i had the same problem. Try this, trun your key to the start position for about 8 to 10 seconds and the try to start it, if it does then its your fuel regulater. If so u have to replace pump because it sits right on top of it. And for u 5.9 guys, make sure u let whoever u order your pump from know that u have a 24 gallon tank. any questions e-mail me at mikgs15dg@aol.com and i'll tell u where i got my pump from and how i installed it.

Message: I have a similar starting problem with my 2001 Dodge Dakota Quad Cab 4.7L V8 as described by Teresa and MikeQ. However, my problem is intermitting. Specifically, about 50% of the time, and usually when the engine is cold, although the engine turns over and cranks immediately it sometimes does not sound like it is firing on all cylinders for about 5 to 10 seconds. However, after sputtering on a few cylinders for a few seconds the engine does come to full idle and afterwards my truck runs/drives just fine. I have no check engine lights and the dealer told me they couldn't find anything wrong after completing a computer diagnoses.
Has anyone tried OffRoadRuss's suggestion? If so, what did you find out? I have not tried it yet but I plan to shortly.
I tried MikeQ's suggestion of turning the key to the start position for about 10 seconds before turning the engine over and that seemed to help a little because the engine would fire and run on all 8 cylinders immediately. However, this fix does not always work. So, is anyone having starting problems similar to mine and, if so, have you found a solution?

Message: I have a 2002 Quad Cab 4x4 Dakota with a 4.7 and 49,000 miles. I have inspected the ball joints and see no play and the boot looks intact and there is no popping sound.
Questions:
1) Can the top of the ball joint be drilled and tapped and a grease fitting installed?
2)I had read that Chrysler had changed ball joint suppliers in the later years. I've asked the Dodge customer service - but no info seems to be available. Can anyone validate this? Does the problem cover all years?
3) Are the control arm bushings a problem too? Is this being investigated as well?

Message: I have a 2001 Dodge Dakota SLT. I couldn't turn the ignition key to start my truck. I parked it and had it in park. When I went to start it I couldn't turn the key to start it. I had a mechanic come and he took a hammer and tapped the end of the key while trying to turn it and it turned and started right up. I have started it a couple of times since and it seems to be alright. I'm wondering if I should take it and have the ignition changed.

Message: I have had the same problem of grinding the ignition to get it to start. It apparently blew the back of the induction manifold out (build up of fuel) and cost over a thousand to replace. The mechanic believes the truck may need a new fuel pump to relieve the tough start. Have any of you had a similar problem ? Truck is 2002 Dodge Dakota

switch??...I hope not the fuel pump---Dodge should have been forced to do something about those fuel pumps!!

Message: Micki, it does sound like the chekc valve in the pump is leaking pressure down. either live with turning the key "on" 1 or 2 times or change the pump. myself i'd live with the 1 or 2 tunrs of the key until the pump dies.

Anyone else found a fix for this intermittent starting problem?

I changed out the fuel pump module on my truck today. What a PITA.
Anyways,
So far, starts right up. Yes, it fires right up the first time I turn the key. Hasn't done that in years.

Message: Well for anyone who is experiencing the problem of
your truck starting for 5-10 seconds and then
engine shuts down. If you try to start your truck 3
times and it does the same thing all 3 times and
the 4th time the engine won't even crank over, the
solution is very simple Change the battery in your
key(#2032) this will solve your problem and the
engine will run.
