Hello everyone, I've got a problem that's been bugging the hell out of me. I've got this really annoying whistling noise coming from my engine. It wasn't there until I put a new belt on which leads me to believe that's the problem, but here's the thing; it only does it when I touch the throttle. I was under the impression that it would whistle all the time. Next I thought it my be my alternator but it doesn't have quite the same tone as one that's going bad. The more I listen to it, it almost sounds like something is sucking air in, but I'm not sure. If anyone has ideas or suggestions, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks a lot.

The "progressive bore" (whatever that means) tb's that dodge use tend to make a whistling noise just off idle. Take the airhat and see if the noise is louder.

My Dakota started doing the exact same thing
during a road trip. I replaced the serpentine
belt - no change. The sound doesn't seem to
be coming from the front of the engine
anyways. It whistles loudly when the engine is
under load - either accelerating or going up a
hill. It also does it when I punch the
accelerator at idle, so it probably isn't the drive
train. Hoping it's a vacuum leak. I'm taking it
into the shop for a transfer case leak !@#$%,
will see what they say about the whistling
sound. Let you know.

Adam, if you installed a segmented serpentine
belt, it will, as you say, whistle. I installed a Dayco belt and it merrly whistles away. As the belt wears it quiets down somewhat.

Regarding my previous posting, I finally fixed the whistling sound coming from my Dakota. It was the catalytic converter. Chrysler cats are notorious for having the internal ceramic coming apart, which causes the infamous 'rattle' sound at idle so common in Dodge trucks (which I had). After replacing the cat, the whistle sound went away. Turns out the ceramic chunks were causing some blockage, causing the exhaust to make a whistling sound.

I have a98 Dakota that makes a terrible whistling. After it
reaches operating temperature thought maybe intake manifold
leak but wouldn't that be constant
