I just bought a 1997 Dakota, 5.2l V8 w/ 37000 miles
from a neighbor down the street. Old man, so it wasen't
dogged out 2 much. It's only got a k&n air filter and
flowmaster so far. Anyway, a friend of mine has a 1995
chevy blazer and claims to have the s-10 ss V6 (ha),
which would only put out about 180hp tops. I know for
sure he has a k&n intake kit, exhaust, and chip. It is also
an automatic. If the crap about the engine is true, he
might be pushing 230hp, which I doubt. So, 2
questions: 1. Could what he says be true, and 2. If he
ever gets the balls to race (he backed out once), who
would win?

well i doubt he has 230 horse because a stock extreme s-10 only has 160 horse to the rear wheels so hes probably more around the 200 horse if hes really lucky.but i have a 5.2 4x4 and i raced a stock s-10 and i could almost run with him but he gets me off the line and only inched away from me so you might be close but if i was you i'd soup yours up a little more before i tried it cause it sucks loosing to v-6's

a vortec 4.3 has 200hp what is your truck is it a 4x4 a reg or cc manual or auto. S-10 blazers are heavy they weigh more than my 4x4 cc a 95 isn't a vortec I think. So you should get him if you can drive. My stock 99 4x4 cc 5.2l 5speed ran a 15.6@92 in the 1/4 I beat a 92 s-10 w/ a built up 4.3L and almost beat a 92 s-10 w/ a 350 tpi I was in 4hi but i ran a 16.0. your dak proubly has 200Hp at the wheels. He maybe added 10 hp at the crank. oh yeah My daks not stock anymore.

Never underestimate a Chevy, NEVER. The 4.3 is no exception. They are quick, responsive V6s that in the past have been known to run with larger V8s. Two buddies of mine set up a drag race to see who was faster. One had his new Silverado 5.3 auto, reg cab, long box, 4X4 and the other one had a 2X4 ex cab auto. Both ran each other in 2 wheel drive with the result of the Silverado edging out the S-10 by no more than .5 truck lengths. Very close.
I ran a ZR2 excab Sonoma about a week ago with my 99 5.2L CC 4X4 and outran him by quite a large margin. I guess it would come down to driver experience and machine.

If it is an auto, I don't see how driver error can come into play too much. About the only thing is to get your launch technique down as to minimize loosing time on spinning and taking off. Second, The S-10 ss's didn't have much of any change to the engine. If i remember correctly something to do wih the geometry of the cam or rocker/pushrods or something and it was good for like 5 hp. Most of the other stuff for the ss was cosmetic, like the rollpan and then upgraded suspension. The newer S-10's from 97 up are pretty badass and can run pretty decent. Ones before that I haven't seen any problems with beating up on. And to boot, we're talking about a blazer which weighs quite a bit more. Anyways if he switched his whole motor out to one in a s-10 ss he would have to be a moron anyways to consider getting the same gain from a High flow air filter

Actually, some of the MPFI 4.3 V6s put out 200HP, which he might have. The 4.3's made anywhere from 160-200HP depending on the year and what option box was selected. And yeah, Chevy 90 degree V6s are suprising. The 3800 Cameros would run with a similarly equipped 5.0 Mustang and the early 4.6 SOHCs. My brother in law with a 4.3 C1500 w/ a 5 speed would routinely take out 350+auto full size trucks.
You'd still probably win, but don't expect it to be easy.

the SS s10 was just a suspension package, with shocks, badging and a roll pan. nothing faster about it. have you ever raced a xtreme? if not, all im saying is that if you loose, there has to be something seriously wrong with your truck!

I have a freind with the Sonoma SLS... I have a quad cab 4.7 auto.... I absolutely blew him away like he was standing still... He beats on his truck but i don't think he would have had
a chance anyway.... both are 2000's. I'm from canada.... do you guys down there even have the sonoma sls's????
