Subject: Transfer Case Disaster IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2001 QC, 4.7L, 5sp, 4WD. My transfer case is shot and is being rebuilt at a cost of $800. I'm beside myself! The truck only has 42K miles on it and the transfer case is blown. How can this be? I don't beat on it or take it off-roading. I only have used it during major snow storms and never on dry roads. I put it into 4WD the last New Hampshire snowstorm, and it sounded like someone let a bag of marbles loose inside it. My "Friendly New England Dodge Dealer" (Bonniville and Sons) basically said that because the warranty has expired (3yr-36K), it is my problem.
Help folks! Is this an isolated incident, or are these common problems? I will be calling the area Customer Service Representative as soon as the truck is fixed and it would be nice if I knew that this happens a lot, so maybe I can get some help covering the cost of this repair.
I had a Toyota before this and never had any trouble with it. I decided to buy American this time to support our country and it has already cost me a set of front rotors and brake pads at 30K miles and now this a couple of months after the warranty expired. This can't be right!

Message: I blew mine in half at about the same miles. It cost the dealer $1400 to fix it. Of course I only use mine in the snow also. Unless a Rustang pulls up next to me at a light. Then it's FWD all the way.

Message: 1998 Dodge Dakota 4x4 automatic transmission V8, 80,000 miles. Transfer case fractured while driving in 2-high. I took into a local (AZ) shop to check front bearings, etc. Mechanic told me thought it was from transfer case. I had previously heard chirping, greased the front drive shaft as discussed on another forum, and chirping stopped. Shop replacing transfer case informed that front drive shaft u-joint next to transfer case was bad, causing vibration, which caused aluminum transfer case to split. Shop is replacing both front u-joints and transfer case to the tune of about $1,500.

Message: I have a 2001 Quad cab 4.7L Autotrans 4X4.
I have not had the problems I've seen posted here, and I have over 109,000 miles on it.
As far as the transfer case goes. These things need to be shifted into and out of 4WD on average of once a month. This keeps them lubricated and functioning. I was told this when I bought mine and remebered it from the last 4WD I had years ago.
Using it rarely will cause trouble, once in a while pull off the road into a dirt lot, field or dirt road and shift it through the range (4HI and 4LO and back to 2WD) to insure lubrication and function.
To those with failed transfer cases, sorry this comes a little to late, I can understand if this is the first time you have heard this. Sales people are not the best at informing customers of requirements.

Message: using on dry roads is ok as long as they are dirt. Using on dry pavement in 4 low or 4 high is not good on the system. AWD is a little different as it allows for slippage.

Message: I have a 2004 4x4 and have used 4WD from time to time. Was under the impression that because the axle is in constant mesh with the front drive shaft that the transfer case is lubricating itself all the time by the drive shaft turning. Not sure if this is right though.

Message: I'm experiencing som major troubles with my 2006 Dodge Dakota 4.7l v8, (69K), it sounds like your
dropping the blade of a D8 dozer when you try to
engage it in 4WD. Someone told me it could be a
vacuum solenoid? How can I tell if the transfer
case needs to be replaced?

Message: Same, just got a used 2006 quad cab 4x4 with a mere
35k miles on it, first time i put in 4x4 worked
great for a couple of hours then boom, went out.
Transfer case failed now I have to get a replacement
which is like $900 just for the part. Bad design!
I will keep in mind to put it into 4wd on occasion
to make sure it keeps lubed and engages properly

Message: I have a '93 Dakota AT,3.9L mag. I am needing a transfer case NP231D. I am getting several different answers on the interchange. Some books same '93 only, some same '88-92 will fit just got to change a few sensors, some say '88-'00 may have to change some sensors. Can anyone tell me what is correct before I spend my money and get stuck with a case that won't work.
