Message: Right now I'm looking at buying a Dakota but I have some concern about what kind of gas milage I'll get. It's a 98 X-Cab with the 5.2, 5-speed, has 3" body and 3" suspension lift with 33" super swampers. It also has a soft tonneau cover on it, and is completely stock under the hood. I tend to drive not super aggressively and don't put the pedal to the floor, but I also don't take a half hour to get up to speed. Also, most of my driving is in the country. Any estimations on what kind of mpg I'd get as it is and what I'd get after some basic mods such as air and muffler upgrades? Also, which would be better, getting a complete cold air intake, or just getting a K&N filter? Any input is greatly appreciated.

Message: I have a 99 dakota cc 4x4 5.2L 5 speed w/ 31" tiresstock I was getting around 15 mpg city in the summer and 17-19 highway w/ a soft tonnea. This winter w/ alot of warmup time I'm getting 11-12 city. Now I have a 360 air intakez, flowmaster 50 series 3" single, edebelbrock headers, msd wires, ngk plugs and a brass cap and rotor. The truck stock ran a 15.6@92 in the 1/4 mile w/ bad traction. So far I love my truck only problems I've had was the water pump going at 81,000 miles anything else was minor or I wanted to upgrade it. I bought it a year ago w/ 71,000 miles it has 84,000 now. I realy like the 360 air intakez it was about $195 I also like my flowmaster 50 series its queit in the cab and untill you put your foot in it then it barks pretty good.

Message: I own a 1992 Dakota 4x4 with a 5.2 V-8. I can't seem to get more than 12mpg at best. I have changed all fluids, plugs, air filter, and oil filter. I have been putting that injector cleaner in the tank for 6 weeks with no effect. What do I do?

Message: when I first purchased my 92 dakota with a 5.2 and 114,000 i got 9-12 mpg. then i put on headers, flomaster 2 chamber, mandrel 3" pipe, chip m.p., K&N, jacobs ignition. And I started getting 18-21 average with a little city and some feeway. On my last trip out to havasu from san diego (alot of heat and mountains) using my a/c I got 21.3mpg there and 22.4 mpg coming back with no a/c and 184,000 miles on the engine. My friends 4 cyl. s-10 gets about 18-23 mpg and is nutless. I'll take the dakota thank you.

Message: to jon: not to much flomaster out of summit at time $54, mandrel pipe installed 90, chip 159 after mailing in old chip, K&N 110, headers 270 including ceramic coating, and the jacobs cost me 600 but that is when it first came out. Now it is down to about 450. I did all of the work except the muffler and pipe. not too bad over 1 year.

Message: The headers are actually pacesetter out of J.C. whitney and took forever to get but are seriously sweet. But the carb e.o. # is for 93-96 dakota's. Ca. street legal headers go with JBA and jet hot coating. very nice but pretty damn expensive.

Message: The best thing is to do a tune up and keep off the gas. If you stand on it, you are going to be paying for lots of gas.
My 92 has 140k miles on it. I usually get 16-18 on it and have made 20.2 on the highway. Since your engine is much tighter than mine, you should be able to get my average mpg of 16-18. My father has a QC Ram and gets this with the 360. The 5.9 has more than enough torque to get you moving. There is no need to stand on it.

Message: have you tried the basics like K&N air filter and a high flo muffler (flowmaster is what I prefer). Those two will usually give you an extra 3-5 mpg on average. I also have a 98 astro cargo van for work and with 1200 lb. in the back and no overdrive (weight smoked it) I averaged 2.5-3.2 mpg gain over when I did have the overdrive. try those two items than look to get headers and ignition and possibly a K&N fipk.
