If you are getting 7-8, I'd start with a full tuneup and lighten up your foot on the pedal. Change your cap, rotor, wires and plugs. Check all fluids (including transmission) and inspect your tires.

If the engine isn't in tune, you will never see the gains possible with mods like headers, etc.

For milage that low, check for a leak in the belly pan gasket. Do you see a puddle of oil when you look down the TB ?

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

I had this problem of low gas mileage as well. I was getting a check engine light code for a bad oxygen sensor on the left side of the motor above the cat converter. Power steering fluid had somehow leaked down to the plug causing the sensor to send the incorrect reading. This caused the engine to run extremely rich (poor gas mileage) and eventually fowled out the sensor. New one solved the problem.

I`d like to know which method of verification is used to find the mpg. I can tell you right up front, that for a truck to get deterioreted to the point of geting 7 or 8 mpg, without any previous simptoms, just don`t make any sense to me.
I drive a 2000 CC 4.7 2wd 3.92 lsd 5 manual,w/ FIPK, 68 tb, HO intake and cams, Gibson Headers and single 3in after cat, bla bla bla etc, and it is a lot easier for me achieve 22mpg of maintainable average, than the ridiculous 7 or 8 mpg that some guys state.
Last winter, after 2 feet of snow for weeks, i got the minimum average ever, and that was 13.8.
Right now my average for the last 900 miles is 21.6 mpg, just trying to be efficient and obeing the speed limit signs.
I think it would be very difficult to reach this level of economy w/ a automatic.
By the way, my computer works perfectly well and it will show up to 3% less mpg than reality if i drive in a really "noisy" way.

Mike,

How long have you had the truck?
Definately get a tuneup.
Are you thowing any engine codes? You should have it checked even if your check engine light isn't on as it may be burned out or removed.

Check for stuck or dirty injectors.
Is your air filter pluged?

Def. check all your fluids.

Check O2 sensors, if bad they will cause horrible gas mileage. However, your idiot light should be on if its the O2 sensors.

I once read that for better mileage, try operating your car or truck at around 1800 rpms (or where your truck is running most efficient. I try to do this while accelerating and find that with the 5.2L I still get up to 35-40 mph pretty quickly.
