I have a '92 Dakota sport, reg. cab, short box, 318, auto, with 355 rearend. Duals w/Dynomax mufflers, flopro ceramic headers, accel coil, mopar performane computer. Am planning 410 rearend and 3-3500 stall converter. The truck has run the best of 14:85 at 93 mph. This truck is drag raced and only street driven in the summer. Crane cams can build me a good size cam that should put me into the mid to low 13's. The problem is fuel. What can I do to solve this?

One step larger on the injectors.

On the cam, make sure they grind it on a 114 Lobe Seperation to be computer friendly. Cams ground on a 112 or lower lobe seperation have a tendency to trip the MIL as well as idle very rough at idle (too rich due to the MAP sensor being out of range - low idle vacuum).

I have a '89 dakota shelby and the fuel system seems to have shut down. Just filled up the tank, got lunch, went back to job site and then it wouldn't start at end of day. It has spark but no fuel to the throttle body. What the @#&^#^$%& is going on. I replaced the external fuel filter.

No fuel to the throttle body. Could it be MAP sensor? Inertia switch? Hall effect sensor?? fuel pump? That is the problem - too many possibilities.. I sure miss the pre emission motors.

My bad, leo. I saw the original post from wally gator and was asking about it. Now that I have looked more carefully, I see his post is about 2 years old!

I'm not familiar with the 89s but do they have throttle body injectors? Anyway, I would check that the fuel pump is working (have someone listen for humming from the pump back there while someone turns the key to Start not Run. Check your fuses (especially the one for the Auto Shutoff Relay). HTH.

For the last 3 months I've had to keep my fuel level above 1/2 tank. Below this it begins to sputter at take off and back fire, as well as runs rough under load and @ idle. I've had 2 garages ($$) look at this and have not solved the problem. The fuel pump apparently is working properly. The latest suggestion is that my #1 cylinder has "faulty guide rings"?? I belive the problem is the fuel pump in some form. This DOES NOT occur when the fuel level is above 1/2 tank.
HELP!!

Dan

I had some of these same symptoms on my 1992 318. It would stall periodically at idle, usually when coming to a stop. Also would have a split second shutoff at low speed takeoffs that would physically jerk the truck. I thought it was my fuel pump as well, since my gauge has been acting erratically for the last year or so.

I also had a blown belly gasket, which had been leaking for quite some time. I pulled the intake off and replaced it with an M1 intake. When I pulled the injectors off I noticed they had a pretty significant buildup of crud on them. I simply cleaned the crud off very carefully with a clean lint free rag. Put everything back together and have not had the stalling since. If the pump is going bad it generally won't start. I also know on my 1992 I have an in line fuel filter under the drivers side frame rail.

I had a similar problem - My truck has a return line back to the gas tank. I had a very VERY small crack in the return line. The area around the crack was slightly damp. I spliced my return line with rubber fuel line and problem resolved.

I have a 92 Dodge Dakota with 147000 miles on it. The other day when I was near my truck I starting smelling fuel I took a look underneath the truck and found that my fuel line(s) (as it started to go into the braided line) was leaking onto the ground. Looking further into the leak it looks like the fuel rail had starting to rust pretty badly. Does anybody know were I can purchase a new fuel line without having to go to the dealer?
Thanks, Rod.
