Message: You should know that Hemi is just a term for Hemispherical heads. You can make Hemispherical heads for any engine out in the market with time and money. Ford had A Hemi and did you know the Quad 4 DOHC GM four cylinder engines like in the Grand AM is a Hemi. It has a Hemispherical designed head.

Message: But one must remember about the HEMI, HEMI was a marketing term, the chamber was actually a Pent-roof design, taking the term "spherical' to its limits.
I am not dissing the HEMI, I would love to have an elephant in my stable.
Also some mis information needs to be corrected from the first page...
"the original elephant was the only engine to put out 425 hp with no mods"
What about the Chevy 427 in 1967, underrated at 435HP from the factory--actually pushed around 490HP. With a simple re-jet, re-curve, and headers known to produce over 525HP.
Now Like I said I would love to have a 426+ HEMI, but to say something like that quote is just mis-informed fanboy type stuff.

Message: If the Dakota gets the HEMI then I'm sure it won't have as much power as even the Durango has (335hp). Automakers have a nasty habit of adding weight to vehicles when they add HP. The Durango is Dodges only SUV and they figured they could move it up a class. So they added around 500lbs. Then added the necessary hp (detuned HEMI) to make it perform about the same as the last generation Durango.
The Dakota is already 4000lbs and up to 4500lbs for the QC 4X4. Notice you couldn't get the 5.9 in any Dakota other than the R/T (Limited Production), until the The QC came out. Since the Ram can weigh as low as 5000lbs they can't afford to add any weight to the Dakota.
The Dakota is supposed to attract buyers of compact trucks. But, it already has gotten attention from full-size shoppers (got my attention). So if they add any more weight what are they gonna do. Go up against the RAM lol. That doesn't make any sense.
The HP and weight adding habit is something that really irritates me. Safety is a good thing and all but?
I can think of a bunch of vehicles where this has been done. Such as the BMW M3. It had 240hp and weighed around 3100lbs. It was a nice performing vehicle. Then they brag about how the new engine (which the Europeans versions had already) is going to have 350hp normally aspirated (both engines are around 3.2 liters or 195ci for those who don't know BMWs) that's a lot of HP per ci (1.8hp per ci to be more accurate). They don't brag about how they are going to add 500lbs to the vehicle. Now the cars performs well, but it's a tank. I thought it was supposed to be a sports car? Not a TANK!
I do, however, applaud Dodge for the SRT-4. I wonder why they don't have a serious sports car though?

Message: Serious sports car. Dodge has it and it is called the Viper. Also, I think the new Durango actually weighs less then the old Durango.

Message: Well, The viper is a serious sports car I agree. I was thinking of something more like a mustang camaro type car. My mistake. Maybe they will make the Razor.
According to Car and Driver the new Durango weighs 5312lbs in SLT 4X4 trim. This is from a Comparrison of Full-Size SUVs
"It's also worth noting that Dodge engineers achieved this expansion without too much weight penalty. At 5312 pounds, the Durango is the lightweight in this showdown."
You can Read the article here

When they tested the R/T Durango in 2000 they weighed that model at 4926lbs.
You can read that here
http://www.caranddriver.com/article.asp?section_id=39&article_id=3281&page_number=3
The R/T is Four wheel drive. I would expect that's a good average weight for one.
I get a difference of 386lbs. Not the 500 I said but pretty close. I like to use 500lbs as a reference. Manufacturers typically add something near that. That amount of weight will take off around 1 second from a 0-60 sprint. That varies a lot from vehicle to vehicle though.
That doesn't keep it from being the best performer in the test. Which appears to have helped it to win the comparrison.
