Message: Still trying to find the source of a squeal under the hood. Does anybody know about how strong the tension should be on the tensioner pulley? Mine is fairly stout. Thanks.

Message: yes they do have alot of tension, they should also move freely as well . how long has this been going on? new belt ,old belt?
alternator and power steering come to mind. cold weather and a large load on the electrical system ,can be some of it ,
need a little more info , when it squeals, how long and so on

Message: thanks for the reply Chris. It's been going on now for about a month. All instruments read normal. I replaced the belt and no change. When it sounds off it is sometimes mild and other time loud but alway in short duration. It doesn't seem to matter if you're driving or parked but is more prevelent driving at steady rpm (1-2K). I was low on pwr steering fluid but replenished it and no difference. This morning I let it idle with the hood up and stood there for probably 15 minutes when it finally squealed...it's definitely in the pully area but hard to locate. Does this give you any help?

Message: thats a start
can you get your hands on a mechanics stethescope
its like your doctors only it has a metal end
after 15 minutes of ideling the engine should be at operating temp
the viscous fan clutch may have cut in causing the squeal. or after 15 minutes of ideling the alt regulator cut in
take the scope and hold it on an area near the
the alt, and the water pump, wait for the squeal
closer you are to it the louder it well be
that said, are you sure that the tensioner is free moving grab it again with a 15 millimeter wrench(box end) on the pully bolt and move it through its range of motion all the way out and back should not feel crunchy, sticky,or have any tight spots. it should flow nicely
what year is that truck, what belt driven options
are you adding any more power steering fluid,

Message: Chris,
It's an 01 with about 45K on it with the normal stuff (ac,alt, pwr steering). That's a good idea on the stethascope. I've done that once before and I'll move the tensioner again. It felt ok when i replaced the belt. I appreciate your help and suggestions.
