Subject: cats and o2 sensors
IP: Logged

Message:
I was just wondering how many o2 sensors there are on a 4.7 and what removing or gutting the cats would do to performance (air/fuel ratio). I had a 98 stang gt and removed 4 cats (98's came stock with 6). The engine ran perfectly fine because the performance o2 sensors were located upstream of the cats. There was another set downstream of the cats but these only served emissions purposes which BTW, my check engine light never came on. So i was wondering if the o2 sensors on our 4.7 daks that help control the proper air/fuel mixture are located before or after the cats.

I guess it also depends on what year 4.7L you have. Some had one cat, some had 2 precats and 1 primary cat.

Also depends on where you bought it. Mine is a 2000 bought in calif which has one precat on each downpipe and a main one in the exhaust after the downpipes merge. Others just have the one cat. If you have 3 cats, then there is an O2 sensor before and after each precat on the 2 downpipes (4 total). If you just have one cat, then there are 2 sensors (one before, one after the cat). As far as I know, all the sensors are used for a/f ratio control (while in closed loop).

2000 4.7 CC auto, clear corners, Magnaflow catback, Kenne Bell s/c.
