Subject: Slop-axle shaft/trasfer case noise

Help. Anyone else had problems with their transfer case on a 2001 4.7L, 5sp QC. It sounds like a bunch of marbles rolling around in the transfer case whenever I put it in 4WD. Sounds worse in reverse. Also, there is a lot of slop in the front axle shaft as it enters the transfer case. Is this going to cost me thousands of dollars, or is it something simple. The last thing I want to do is bring it back to that rip-off dealer where I bought the truck. My back side is still sore from the last screwin I took from them. (Bonniville - Manchester, NH)

Take it into the dealer...that should be covered under warranty...a lot of times there are parts in the transfer case that aren't aligned right or whatever it may be...but they should fix it for you

Unfortunately, the warranty is up. I am bringing it to a reputable drive train shop on Monday. When I talked to the owner, he said that he sees at least 4 Dakotas and Durangos each month for a variety of things wrong with the transfer case. He pointed out that Dodge now uses cheap bearings and plastic parts in their transfer case that are prone to failure and he is seeing more and more problems with them. I'll let you know what the problem is when he opens it up.

I'm interested in the resolution to your problem. I've got 60K on my 2000 Club Cab 4.7L SLT and hear the same sound. At one point my rear u-joint failed. Felt slight vibration in front. 4WD felt fine after that was fixed. Then had an accident (slid on ice into tree, then fell over on side down embankment). right after the accident, it sounded horrible in 4WD, been hearing clicking sound for while now even in 2WD.

Not sure if y'all are having the same problem...not even sure which transfer cases were used on what year Daks... Anyhow, I have a 1998 5.2L, 4X4, and had some annoying noises comng from the t-case in 4wd. Nothing that excited me too much, but when I removed the t-case and tranny to replace my clutch I found that the bearing around the input shaft to the t-case was thrashed. The inner and outer races were in place, but the balls in the bearing were free to roam since the metal cage that separates and evenly spaces the balls was totally disintegrated and nowhere to be found (save for the shavings in the oil).

My local Dodge shop gave me a copy of the shop manual covering the removal and installation of the input bearing. According to that, you're supposed to take the entire t-case apart, separate the halves, and drive the bearing out from the inside. Just wanted to let y'all know that if this is the case for you, there's an easier way to remove and install the bearing from the outside without having to deal with any of th inner-workings. It involves a a piece of steel pipe, a welder, and a slide-hammer...got the picture? Once my brother and I figured that out, the entire removal and install of the new bearing took about ten minutes.

Also, since I used to work at an auto parts store, I was able to cross-reference the bearing number to find an exact replacement without having to pay the OEM replacement price for the Dodge part (I think the replacement was Chicago-Rawhide or Timken...something name brand like that).

Anybody finds themself in the same situation or want advice on that, feel free to shoot me an email: koryklismith@hotmail.com.

The old bearing had 60,000 or so miles on it, and the new one has 30,000 or so on it with no problems.
