Look, if you're going to post an ET on the board make sure that is not exagerated. I have an '02 R/T that I took to the track with nothing but an oldschool eldelbrock filter. Even with that filter sucking in hot engine air it ran a best of 15.6 seconds. There was also a 4.7l dakota with a 5 speed and 3.90 gears at the track that ran a best of 15.8, this was after he had stripped the tailgate and spare tire. I happen to know exactly what his drivetrain was because I was impressed with how quick it was running EVEN THOUGH IT DID NOT RUN QUICKER THAN MY R/T. I guess the answer is up to you to decide but I know that a stock R/T can beat a 4.7 5-speed by at least two car lengths in the quarter.

I had alot of traction problems spinning bad in 1st and 2nd a little 3rd too it was opening day at new england dragway they had just redone the track. a cc r/t ran a 15.7 the same day.

02R/T.... I ran those (more than once) 15.2s at about 500ft about sea level, 60 degrees and I happened to get great traction on my stock 15" rims with stock goodyear crap tires. The next night out I never hooked up, spun out of the hole each time, and ran 15.5-15.8. I have no reason to exagerate my ET.
My point was a same track, same night, stock truck comparison.... obviously, put a 16 year old in my truck and me in an R/T, and the numbers would be different (not to mention it's easier to launch an auto with 9" tires compared to a stick with 6" tires).
If you think I exagerate my times, then I think you're lying about the 4.7 5spd.....
HSKR..... I realize that I have some work to do in the suspension department, but had I gotten an R/T I would have put the hotchkiss suspension anyway, so why pay extra for a suspension I'm going to put in the trash anyway. And I'm (patiently) waiting for a good set of used R/T wheels with tires... anyone.... anyone?

The NV-4500 is roughly the same size as a 3500.

Now the NV5600 (6speed) is completly defferent.

The NV-4500 is a heavy duty transmission (Note the very low first) But it can take up to 460 LBs of tourqe is stock form.

But it does do wonders for a V8 such as a 360 and rally pulls 100 % better than a auto.

And yes, you could back in '98 special order a R/T with a 5 speed transmission (NV4500 with a higher first gear. Hey if you got the money to spend, Chrysler would build it for you.

If you had the money... rrright. Of course you alone would have to pay for all the EPA emission testing and MPG testing requires by the federal government, as every motor and transmission combination in each application has to be tested. Seeing as how you'd have the only 360 nv-4500 combo in a Dakota ever made (with the transmission tunnel mods require to make it fit, as it is physically bigger) it would only add maybe $50,000 to the price of a standard R/T. I'm sure that they had people just lining up. I guess on the same logic they must have made a bunch of viper powered neons as well?

I don't get it, how come they say the manual transmissions cant handle the torque of the 360 yet tons of manual 5.2's and 4.7's run a supercharger with way more torque than a N/A 360?

The same reasons Lightning owners pay extra for thier SC only to trash it for a better unit. And yes, a lot of Lightning owners have upgraded to a better SC. My power robbing weight adding auto tranny in my R/T would still have beat 95% of the 4.7 manual trannied Daks on the road stock to stock

Noped, you are correct since I haven't had a stock R/T for over three years. ANd when I did, there was no such thing as a 4.7 in a Dakota

Who cares about stock anyway??? Crying about how stock the truck is doesn't change the fact that you just got smoked by any modded vehicle. At the track the only real subject is who ran what in the quarter, not who has the least amount of mods.

Oh, If I remember correctly the fastest dakotas I've heard and read about don't have 4.7s sitting in their engine bays. ;)

Pittdawg, are there really tons, or just a few? Have those few ever bolted on a set of slicks, and raced very often without breaking any parts/ The problem is that New Venture who makes the tansmission says it's good to a certain point, something like 340 ft-lbs in a HD NV-3500. So if Dodge puts 350 ft-lbs to it and it breaks more often then would be considered acceptible, then who ends up covering the repair? If Dodge had a problem with 1000's of transmissions installed in the parameters recommended by New Venture, then I bet Dodge would have some recourse to cover the added warranty work. So it may live behind a blown 318, but it is probably much more likely to fail, also with the lower first gear's torque multiplication of the NV-3500, the rear axle would also start to be a problem.

I don't think the problem is so much the tranny can't handle it, but the fact that as Hersbird said, other parts woudl start failing as well, and clutches woudl be burning like crazy with R/T owners and manual trannnies.
