Subject: M-1...now what? IP: Logged
Message: I love the top end with the M1, but as soon as the power comes on I have to shift. What can I do other than putting a new cam in to help me get more mrp out of my motor? So far I've done K&N fipk2, M.P.TB,M-1 w/XL turtle, and dual flows. Should my next step be 1.7rr,pph headers,or B&G flash.(its a 2001 R/T)

Message: What rpms are you shifting at? What throtlebody are you using and which M-1? I would say your best bet is the B&G flash, they are expensive but, they raise shift points, extend the rpm limiter and much more.

Message: The only way to get more revs is the B&G or Hypertech PPIII, if you want to shift on your own. In order to rev far without hurting something you need roller rockers and new valve springs. After that your really going to have to do some headers and either a cut-out or high flow cat. So I guess the answer is really all of them and a few other things.

Message: Your truck is forced to shift by the computer. You can move your powerband up all you want. The PCM is still gonna make it shift (or hit the rev limiter) at around 5200. A computer tweak is your only answer.
I've heard the PCM will "re-learn" itself back to stock and write over the Hypertech after a while. But I guess you could just reflash it every month with the Hypertech if needed.
The B&G Flash is good, but way too expensive in my opinion. But I guess since they have a monopoly on the market they can name their own price. :-(
BUT.......... There are some rumors floating around that an alternative to both should be available soon, like in a few months if all goes well. I can't say much more about it (mainly cuz I don't know the details), but if I were you I'd wait before spending the cash on either the Hypertech or B&G Flash - If you can wait.
I have a 2002 R/T so I know your pain! No Mopar PCM!!!
Oh, BTW - I installed 2000 year model headers on my 2002, deleted all three cats (simm box) and ran a 3" single exhaust through a Dynomax Super Turbo then dumped. I used to run 15.4 all day, everyday. With the header/exhaust setup and some 35* weather I pulled a new best time of 14.71 @ 92mph. So I guess it's safe to say the headers were worth it!! Especially on the 01 and up trucks cuz of the three cats.
So my advice is do headers/cat delete and the 1.7rr's, and maybe a stall convertor while you WAIT for a PCM solution.

Message: What mods have u done besides the exhuast? The reason I ask is after the M-1 went on if I let the computer shift at 4800 it kind of bogs down. The sound of 5400 with the flash sounds good but will it hurt my stock rockers and springs?

Message: So far my only mods are -
Homemade cai tube (4" pvc pipe) and K&N cone filter
Echlin brass cap and rotor
Autolite 3923 plugs
180* T-Stat
MSD 8.5mm wires
MSD stock replacement coil
Relocate IAT sensor to air tube
Oh, and the exhaust. The only real mod as far as I'd say. I don't know how much, if any, the other stuff helped. Maybe a little, all combined together.
My tax return may be buying the M1, F&B tb, and either some 1.7rr's or 2400 stall (or both).
Are you running a turtle in the M1? I've heard they help. I have an ex-large already, and I haven't even bought the M1 yet! LOL!!
And 5400 should not be a problem with stock springs and/or rockers.

There are some real R/T experts over there. They can answer all your "modding" questions I'm sure. I'm "Ginther" over there too.

Message: Some people put a turtle (not a real turtle) into their M-1 to restore some of the lower end power that is lost with the M-1. Actually, a real turtle might work too.. or at least just the shell part.

Message: Sorry. Yes, it is a part that you can buy. They come in different sizes. Someone was on this board not too long ago trying to sell some. I'm sure if you do a search you will find better info. I don't know too much about them since I don't have a 5.2 or 5.9.

Message: Hey Lew...what did you thing of the Gibson set-up. At the end of next week i am going to drop $900 on there ss header and there ss singel cat back exhaust. Is it worth it. And to anyone who has done it...i have a 2001 R/T and i noticed that there are 3 cats. 2 at the y-pipe and 1 later down the road. When you get thee headers do you get a new y-pipe so you can ditch those 2 cats? I have also heard of people gutting the 3rd. How do you do that and woulnd't it turn on the service soon lite. Thanks for the help.

Message: Matt, i have a 2002 R/T and i got gibson headers for it. they only go up to the y pipe. if u want to eliminate the precats u will need to buy a y pipe seperately and a cat simulation box to plug the o2 sensors into. Also, i removed my third cat completely and put a straight pipe and the engine light never came on.

Message: Joey, where would you get the y pipe. Just an exhaust shop. And what about the simulation box. I looked in a summet book and they didn't have one for dodge. Did you like the performance difference?

Message: Matt, i was actually planning on getting the y pipe online from www.truckperformance.com. from there u can buy a y pipe for a 99 R/T and attach it to ur headers. As for the simm box go to www.thefastman.com this site has all sorts of stuff for dodge engines. on it u will find a link that says O2 Simms and thats it. Just by putting headers on it only made a small difference because the rest of my exhaust was still stock but once i removed the third cat it finnally made more of a difference.

Message: If you want to put headers on a 2001+ I recomend KRC's complete header kit. They use mopar headers(which are the best)and include cat boxes in their kit. Go to www.krcperfomance.com, then click on the exhuast section and look 4 the headers on the left side of the screen with 2001+ written above them.
