I SEEM TO BE LEANING TWOARDS THE BORLA, BUT OPEN FOR ANY RECOMMENDATIONS?

Message: I've got a flowmaster 3" exit on my 99 5.2 and I love it. However, I seem to have lost some low end. An AirRaid intake, and autolite 3923's are the only other mods I did. From what I've heard, if you want sound Flowmaster is what you want, but if you want performance with little or no low end tq loss Magnaflow is the way to go.
You really should atleast consider a cold air intake if your gonna do exhaust. No sense in letting more out if your not gonna put more in.

Message: I vote flowmaster 40 series. If you want it loud get a single in dual out but you will lose low end. I would recommend 2.5" single in/out

Message: I've been trying to decide on which exhaust for my '02 4.7 QC. I don't really care about the sound, I just want the exhaust manufacturers to actually show some torque/hp data to document the improvements over the whole range, preferably with no loss at the low end.
I prefer the stealth thing..make the truck look and sound like an ordinary plain old truck, but have all the surprises hidden... more fun that way to mess with all the little imports with the grapefruit launcher mufflers. ;-)
From what i've read on these forums, it seems that staying with a 2.5" single pipe system is the way to go, and that's pretty much what it has from the factory anyway. I'm just thinking of switching to a stainless steel system just to last longer.. probably Borla, but I'd still like to see the data..
anyone have any links to any sites that show actual dyno data for which system works best???

Message: I WENT TO THE LOCAL SPEED SHOP (FAMILY OWNED BUSINESS) AND THE FELLA TOLD ME BEING THAT MY TRUCK WAS AN '02 THE DUALS OUT THE REAR WOULD NOT FIT WITHOUT TAKING THE SPARE DOWN AND STORING IT IN THE BED. HE ALSO SAID THAT THE DUAL SIDE EXHAUST WOULD REQUIRE THE SAME. HE DID SUGGEST THAT I CHANGE MY AIR FILTER, WHICH I ALREADY DID. BUT IN ADDITION I CHANGE THE CHIP. HE SAID THAT PUTTING THE AIR FILTER IN INCREASED MY AIR INTAKE, BUT THE COMPUTER WOULD AUTOMATICLY ADJUST MY SETTINGS TO WHERE THEY WERE BEFORE THE K&N WAS INSTALLED. SO I AM REALLY GAINING NOTHING THERE, THATS WHY HE SUGGESTED THE CHIP. (STAGE 1) FOR A LITTLE ADDED STREET PREFORMANCE AND TO LET THE AIR FILTER WORK THE WAY IT WAS INTENDED. I WOULD STILL LIKE TO HAVE A EXHAUST SYSTEM, SHORT OF GETTING A GOOD SET OF HOOKERS AND DBL CATS AND MUFFLERS, THE MONEY IS THEIR, WIFE MIGHT NOT BE, DODGE MIGHT NOT LIKE THIS FOR WARRANTY PURPOSES.
WHY DOES THIS HAVE TO BE SO HARD..........

Message: See that is where I am getting a little nervous.
I was looking at the catalog, now this was a gibson cat-back, and it did read in the catalog that if 16" tires were on the vehicle that the spare would have to be removed. The catalog read the same for the borla & flowmaster. I just do not want to spend this money and not be able to use this without taking the spare and storing it in the bed. I do want stainless, Not cheap, but I want to do this right.

Message: Rick, I know it does not look like it and most owners are unaware but the 2.5" exaust pipe on your 4.7 "IS" stainless from the factory and is heavier gauge than ANY cat/back kit from any after market company. Your stock muffler is stainless as welll (pretty and polished?,,,no), so save the money and keep better heavier stock pipe on your truck until you do some MAJOR mods and need 3" (which will probably be when its supercharged!)and put the extra money saved into a MagnaFlow 2 1/2in and out muffler. Its not loud but it roars when you hit it! Hope this helps and good luck Rick, which ever way you go!

Message: Jimi, thanks for the post, but are you sure about that? My 4.7 QC exhaust system is EXTREMELY rusty after only 1 year old... I've had stainless systems on other vehicles I've owned and they never rusted this way. I'll have to do the old magnet test. 300 series stainless is normally non-magnetic (although it can become magnetic when worked such as forging or bending).. but it's usually a quick test..

Message: rick38,
Jimi's advice was great advice. AND, you're only gong to get a different sound! That's about it, for many people who are honest about that, it's still worth it though.
And I think he's right about the SS system, just a lower, non finished grade of it that CAN get surface rust, but shouldn't rust thru unless changed somehow.

Message: I have been researching your question for myself for the past 3 weeks by reading everything I can about exhaust on this board and Delphi.
What I seem to be hearing is that on a 4.7 you will benifit some (perhaps only slightly) with a cat back system. You will benifit more with a cat back AND air intake in combination - more air in, more air out = some HP/TQ gain - how much of a gain and where in the powerband you receive it seems to be an open question. From what I have read, with the 4.7 it is good to increase in/out airflow, but only up to a point unless you don't mind losing some low end performance in favor of high end gains.
I'm not sure, but I am leaning to a Gibson set up, but utilizing my stock 2 1/2" tailpipe rather than their 3" so as not to relieve too much back pressure and negatively impact my low end - but I pull a 2500lb boat, so low end might be more important to me than others.
I am not sure I will use my 2 1/2" tailpipe, but I am leaning that way. Dan Gruber - punch in his name in the search engine here and read some of his comments on exhaust/intake, as well as reviewing the comments of others on the subject using the site's search engine. You'll learn a great deal - this is the most informative site of its kind I know of. BTW - you can take any of Bernd's comments to the bank!!
One other note - John at Intenseintake makes the Z Tube which many here favor - I am torn about this intake for my application because he tells me it is intended/designed to improve high end, not low end, performance.
In any event, when you speak of exhaust mods, never do it without also considering increasing air intake flow. That's simply my opinion.
MD
