Subject: R/T reliable?? IP: Logged
Message: I am going to buy an R/T very soon. I found one that I really like and runs great, BUT it does have 77K on it. For a '99 that is alot to me, but willing that it was taken care of Will I be okay? Any help is greatly appreciated as I am new to the R/T, yet familiar with sports cars. THANKS

Message: Speaking from experience and at 66K miles now ... Most likely quite a few of the problems we encounter have already been addressed at least once on that R/T. If it does not come with what's left of an extended warranty, make sure you check all the obvious things(check em anyway)...
1. Ball Joints
2. Pinging on 87 octane
3. A/C - Heater functionality
4. Brakes
5. Run the on-board diag using the trip button when turning the key to ON position
6. Belt Tensioner
7. Water on passenger floorboard
8. All the other obvious used car buying stuff
Good Luck to you as I still enjoy the he11 outta my R/T with the extended warranty.
BTW - I have a used MOPAR PCM if you're interested for that year R/T.
Flame Red '99 R/T CC 52mm TB - HomeBrewed K&N Intake, 3923 AutoLites, Taylor 8mm wires, TPS @.73 , 180 TStat , Falken 285/60/R17s on Rear, RoadMaster Active Suspension, SS rollpan, XTang soft Tonneau, Mopar Bra And one Heavy Foot

Message: How much do they want for it? I have a 18,500 mile 2000 R/T I only want $12,500 for and it's still under the factory bumper-to-bumper warranty.

Message: You can't check the PCM codes on a '98-'99 without a DRB scanner. Holding the odo reset button in only does a guage cluster check. I had 120K mils on my '99 R/T when I wrecked it, and the ball joints had just started to go bad(had replaced the uppers about 2000 miles before wreck) I had ben through 5 sets of rotors(2 because of using ceramic pads and cracking them) And about 6 sets of tires. Interior still looked awasome, and it only used 1/2 a quartf of oil between oil changes. Used Mobile 1 sythetic and changed every 3K. The rear diferential broke on my at about 90K(probably due to me racing it) and the stock limited slip was replaced with a PowerTrax unit(now in my new truck) Tranny still shifted good, and I never had driveline vibration, which is something youmight want to check as well(CCs only) Check the ball joints aas mentioned if you can. You will need to jack up the front end to do so. Also check the rear upper passenger side control arm buching, the one closest to the header/manifold. They have a tendancy to go bad from the extremem heat.

Message: There is nothing wrong with my truck. The book value on a 2000 RC R/T with 18,500 miles is anywhere form $10,400 auction to $15,000 high dealer certified retail. In Montana, right after the biggest snow of the year it's worth closer to auction price! I was offered as much as $12,500 in trade but that was at the Jeep dealer, I deceided I wanted a Hemi Ram though and was just planning on keeping the R/T and selling it slowly or on consignment. The dealer ran my credit through the credit union I always use and they said I can not have 3 payments at one time (my wife's van, my R/T and my new Ram) so when the Ram comes I have to have already sold the R/T or trade it in. Seeing as how the dealer now knows my hand, if I bring it in for trade in they will have me over the coals knowing I have to accept their offer. In that case I don't expect the offer to be any better then $11,000. I thought about E-bay but I don't think a R/T has met reserve in the last month there but maybe some of the reserves are too high. Anyway I bought a cover ad in the local autofinder which is probably my best shot. It's tax return time and we have a big college student population here. I live probably a long way away from anybody here but a car can probably be shipped about anywhere in the US for about $750. I live in Western Montana where interstate 90 and highway 93 come together. I have my e-mail, phone number and a few pictures at www.rockymountainmusic.net/kota.html also I have a page at www.cardomain.com under the username hersbird.
The only thing my R/T is short on is rear tire tread, it is other wise perfectly straight except for a dime size ding in the rear bumber along the bottom edge below the step. The fog light lenses have slight spider cracks and the front seat as tiny burn on it (I don't smoke but it was a corporate fleet truck before I got it.) I really don't think it has ever been wrecked, at least the front and rear bumbers still carry a paper tag with my VIN on it, and I think that would have been removed if they were repainted. The Carfacts report on it is clean as well. I have never had to service anything besides oil changes and I do that myself. I also relocated the IAT, and put in a MP pcm, and a 180 degree t-stat. I have had the clutch fan off in the past as well but it's back on right now. The dealer I bought it from had the windows professionaly tinted as well before I bought it. The truck doesn't have all the extras most R/Ts do like power windows and locks or a infinity system. But it does have the good stuff, R/T package (which includes criuse, tilt, fog lights, and the obvious R/T stuff like wheels, 360, body and suspension mods), A/C, and HD service group. I also have a set of studded snows mounted on steel wheels for those who live in snow country (cost about $600 and have about 1000 miles on them), they make the R/T survive even as a daily driver in Montana.
