Message: Hi, Somebody emailed me a few days ago saying they had a stock intake manifold for sale that'd fit my 95 dak 318. What kind of gains can be had by porting and polishing the factory manifold? or how about shortening the runners?
any advice is much appreciated as I don't want to drop 350-400 on an M1
thanks in advance

Message: I only cut 1" off my intake, it increase it's low end grunt while adding another 500rpm to the power band.
The stock non ported intake leveled out around 4300 rpms which is not to bad for a stock cam but not the best for my cam. It doesn't stop pulling, it just doesn't increase in power.
Get the 2bbl M1 if you want a good 4000 and up power.
In my case the power band from idle to 4000 was too much of a loss to only have an advantage for 800 rpm letting the truck shift on it's own. If I wanted power I had to column shift for another 450 rpm and hope I move the shifter before the fuel cuts out. 5250 RPM
With my KRC206 Cam and my own cut & ported intake It now pulls up to around 4800 before leveling out. The cam is good for 5000 rpm and still power producing at 5200-5500rpm.

Message: i'm not quite sure what you mean in the 4th paragraph
>In my case the power band from idle to 4000 was >too much of a loss to only have an advantage >for 800 rpm
you lost power from 0-4000? could you please clear this up a bit for me?
btw, the specs on my cam are
lift duration centerline
.480/.512 206/210 180
where should the powerband be with this?
my machinist recommended it to me it really doesn't start to pull hard untill about 3000 I would have expected a bit lower
Thanks

Message: I was referring to the M1
from idle to 4000, the cut & ported intake made more power than the M1 2bbl.
from 4100 to 4500 seems around the same now
from 4600 and up the M1 has the advantage still.
Overall I see more power in my stock RPM range than I do with the M1 2bbl.
Now if I had a 5500 to 6000rpm shift redline, then the M1 2bbl would be the best way to go.
My KRC206 Cam pull hard from Idle to my redline, power really picks up around 3000 and around 4000rpms it's pulling like a boosted banshee.
I've notice most gas engine start coming to life around 3000 rpms, no matter what setup it has. Only diesel engines seems to have real power under 3000 rpms.

Message: I believe my cam is based on the 206. I thought I ordered the 210 but I guess not. I like my engine so far, I can tear up any 50 mustang and the newer g/t's. I do have one friend with a '98 Z-71 that will eat me alive off the line and run with me after that. He says its stock and I know he didn't do anything to it because I went along to buy it (used.)
from what your saying, I think I should stick with a modified stock manifold untill I can throw a PCM in there too. Was the difference worth the time invested in 'machining' a factory manifold?
I'm also trying to decide on which headers to buy now that I have a job again so any advice with either part is appreciated
thanks again

Message: The only money I invested in the stock intake was buying some dermel blades that could cut into metal. I went threw 10 blades :) $1 per blade. It only took me two days with a few hours invested each day. I used a high temp RTV sealant to seal up the pan rather than the normal RTV black sealant plus using the old gasket which was fine. It took a few starts and revs to make the PCM adjust to the new intake air flow. You could go two inchs with no problems, since this was my first time doing this I went easy on it 1 1/2". I can't wait for the track to open back up.
I tried gibson headers, no big performance gain or exhaust note. I would say, it might give you 5hp for $300+. Only way headers would give you extra power would be full lenght headers verses the shorty headers that most are. Stock are better than you think, plus less engine bay heat :) and noise.

Message: A while back when I looked at the hughes site they used some kind of filler to reduce the plenum volume of the intake. Has anybody tried that? if so what kind of filler material did you use? any gains worth speaking of?
Anthony, did you have any other mods to the engine when you had the headers? With my v6 (which I pulled out a year ago) the headers made a noticable difference but I also had a PCM and P&P'd throttle body. then the headers made a difference you could feel, but a stock engine may actually loose power in my opinion
thanks

Message: I had these parts
FIPK2 K&N SYSTEM ,F&B 50MM TB, M1 2bbl, Lrg Turtle
2.02 Iron R/T heads+fel pro gaskets, KRC206 CAM, 1.7 Mopar RR, Mopar Covers.
Gutted 3rd cat, crank sensor mod, magnaflow exhaust, gibson nickplated headers.
JBL 9mm Wires, AUTOLITES, BORG-WARNER CAP & ROTOR
IAT ADJUSTER
Now I only run with,
K&N FIPK2,50MM F&B TB, MODDED BEER KEG, KRC206 CAM, 2.02 R/T HEADS, NGK PLUGS, CRANK SENSOR MOD,
EVERY THING ELSE STOCK, SEEMS TO RUN FASTER THIS WAY, PLUS HAS THAT SLEEPER LOOK HAHAHA, No problems getting warrenty work done too :)

Message: so you took off the roller rockers and the intake manifold and replaced the cat? damn I
thought that they would have helped. With all those parts it should've run like a raped ape but the 2.02 heads I think are a bit much for a n/a engine. perhaps you would've had (alot)more torque if you had kept with the 1.92's

Message: Well, the flow numbers on the non-ported 2.02 heads where just about right. For the money it wasn't much more than the 1.92 non-ported but still cheaper than the 1.92 ported while flowing a little under the ported 1.92's.
Well, I had cut off the third cat and added a straight pipe. The drone was so bad that I ordered a spiral muffler to replace the pipe. It now sounds great, no horrible drone at 60mph or farm truck puffing sounds. Yes, I sold the headers, intake, & rockers 1.7
If I don't sell or trade the truck in some time later this year, I'll have to pull the engine and throw some new slugs and maybe get a 409 kit. Time & money will tell.

Message: Thanks for all the info Anthony. I hope the 408 swap goes well for ya but I'd hate to see how much its going to cost.
