Message: Can I tow a 2500lb boat and trailer with my 02 CC R/T. I think I have read somewhere that I can only tow 1800lbs but would it hurt to tow a little more. Thanks guys.

Message: I thought that the r/t's couldn't even hold that much but its very likley i could be wrong, anyways i have the 4.7 cc dakota and today i halded 1 ton of pellets for thoughs wood stoves it sit down about 4 inches but i was impressed because you couldn't hardley tell the wieght was back there, in the summer i haul my old hotrod to the races on a heavy duty trailer and the truck alone is 4500 pounds more with the bigblock 454 in it again hauls it with no problems in MY opinion a truck can haul more than what they say, what they say is just for saftey reasons only

Message: I don't know how much they are but you could get the bags for the back so you can haul more weight, you just air them up when your hauling your boat, bags would be worth the extra money,so you could haul the boat, man i wish i had a boat.

Message: I don't think the limitation on towing with an R/T is weight in the bed. The tounge weight of a his combo should not be more than 200 pounds or so.
I guess someone needs to chime in with the reason R/T's can't haul as much as a non R/T.
I know my '03 4x4, SLT+, 4.7L, 3.92LSD, 5sp auto is rated at approx 6K lbs. The same drivetrain in a RAM is rated at 7500 lbs. The difference is that the RAM weighs more and can handle the 7500 lbs pushing it, where the Dak really can't.
I know the R/T has the torqe and drivetrain to manage much more than 2k lbs in tow.

Message: The reson they lowered the rating on the R/T is its 1 or 2 inches lower and hey just modified the leafs and it has a 9 1/4 axle instead of a 8 1/4 which means it has less suspesion travel and will bottom out on the bump stop easier causing premature rear frame failure i read it on a site of a guy who batted it out w/ DC and they bought the truck back from him because they advertised it at 6000lbs when he bought it but I think as long as it doesn't bottom out your all set or get some load helper springs or airbags to prevent bottoming

Message: What is the maximum towing weight that a 4.7L engine can pull? I am thinking about buying an 8 cylinder Dakota either a 2002 or 2003 depending on price to pull a 2 horse aluminum trailer. For example would it pull up to 6,000 pounds safely on the highway?

Message: someone once ran actual numbers and determined an r/t is good for 4900 lbs with hitch and airbags.
for a 2500lb boat...i'd just do a hitch and try it out..if it bottoms out on big bumps then worry about bags.

Message: The R/T is rated for 2000 lbs. Mainly, as others have stated, the suspension and it bottoming out. Several years ago, Dodge had to offer to buy back any R/T it sold due to false advertisement. Now, what it CAN tow and what it's RATED to tow is two different subject matters. My truck is only RATED with a payload of 1,500 lbs, but I know it can handle a full ton easily without coming close to sitting on the axle.

Message: I just bought a '02 QC 4.7L V8. within 1hr from leaving the dealership I grabbed the trailer and loaded up my '93 Dak 3.9L V6 with a busted tranny. Curb weight is slightly over 4K & towed it without a struggle.
It did get unstable @ 80mph though... guess it was due to the bumpy road causing the towed vehicle to bounce violently (hint of sarcasm) I slowed to 70 & set the cruise control.
I bought this truck to tow my boat (4500 lbs)but looking at the Lev-a-Load system from Ranco ( http://www.gorancho.com/products/loadcontrol.stm#Lev) from Summit for added control and capacity. I've seen universal spring mounts in the racing catelog. requires welding the mounts to the frame & axle then you buy coil springs according to the ride height.
Good Luck & See ya on the water

Next time a Honduh wants to race Ask him how many sheets of plywood he can haul?

Message: If you plan on towing anyting more than 3000lbs. you better have brakes on the trailer, or a newer dak. with the 4-wheel disk brakes. the brakes on my 2000 standard cab 4.7 dak just stick its middle finger up at me when im towing more than 3000lbs and hit the brakes
