I was at the parts store the other day and noticed valvoline motor oil for high mileage vehicles...is there any credibility or any reason to change oil when your truck exceeds 75,000 miles. I have been faithful with penzoil and bosch filters every 3000-5000 miles.

i change my oil every 5000KM or 3mths relgiously its one key to keeping an engine pumping. the higher milage oil i dont buy into . ive owned my 2000 since new ,and bought my 93 used . since i had no record on the 93 i did 3 quick oil changes 2000KM apart then followed up with a slick 50 oil tratment and now i only run my regular oil changes i use the FE292 MOPAR on my 2000 and the fram DG16 on my 93 . i use CASTROL in both trucks ,and everything else i own that has an engine.

Well you would have to contact the manufacture for exact details. I read in a car magazine that it has more seal swelling chemicals and more anti wear additives. DO I think you need it, NO!!! IF you need to swell your seals just buy some Tri-Seal or Bars No Leak for Engines!! It is a gimick to sell more oil at a slightly higer price.

ok
you wanna swell seals ,add a half pint of DOT3 brake fliud to the crank case well swell neoprene seals, wanna get the valve seals to to close up a little, a liter of dexron III tranny oil . if your rockers rattle soak a sponge in oil and torque it down under the rocker covers, if the engine has low oil pressure 15W40 brings it up, and so on
nobody needs the high milage oil if you maintain a maintainence regiment.

Slick 50 is gimmick.
High mileage oil is a gimmick.
Basically stick to your book and run 5w30 and 10w30 for the life of your vehicle and you will be ok. I wouldn't run pennzoil cause they are too cozy with quacker state and we all know what that means....."parafin wax".....I have always loved Castrol. But all them oil treatments use is thicker oil to prevent leak down on our hydraulic lifters so your noise engine quiets up but the problems is still there....solution....replace lifters. If you have a stuck one or just want to clean the engine a little then get a heavy duty oil filter and run tranny oil or MMO throught your engine for a hundred or so miles and change. But ususally when you use all them snake oils you are doing the inevitable....delaying a teardown and rebuild

A recent issue of Lubes-n-Greases had a article on the high mileage oils and Valvoline (holding 80% of the High Mileage Oil market) attributes them to "padding their bottom line quite nicely". They "DID NOT" mention the benefits of using such a product but they sure were pleased with the results of the marketing.

For high mileage vehicles that have not been maintained well, or there is no way to determine how they were maintained, I might consider using these oils. I think the best thing about them is that they are thicker oils, so instead of being like most Xw-30 oils which are thin 30wts, these are on the high end. Perfect for aging engines. And the added esters do help a little bit. And, I do believe the high mileage oils are better if you want to do 5k mile drains instead of 3k, since they are usually "hydrocracked" semi synthetic oils technically.

I used to work at Jiffy Lube and we carried Pennzoil High Mileage oil. From what I saw the stuff kinda worked. I used to have a 91 Lincoln LSC with a 5.0, those motors (as nice as they are) have the bad habbit of pissin oil out the rear main. Mine was no exception, so I dropped in some High Mileage oil and it acutally did stop the leak. I was pretty impressed. But maybe I just got lucky.

Just my $.02

high mileage oil?

does this mean my truck will get to 200,000 miles if I use it? or is it for trucks that already have high miles on the odometer??

I have a truck that some would consider high mileage (192,000 miles). It has had oil changes every 3000-6000 miles with dino oil except for a recent random one with synthetic blend 20W-50? The truck has been maintained properly. It does however clatter on cold or cool startups for a few minutes. I keep my shifts very low RPM then it goes away once the engine warms.

The truck calls for 5W30 oil which typically is not a "high mileage" oil if you go to the sea of oil's at Walmart. The truck does not really burn any significant amount of oil, the stick at 5000 miles typically is down maybe half a quart so I don't bother to refill and just change it.

Does the high mileage oil just add seal conditioners to slow leaks or is there something else special about it?

Johnny,

It appears that many owners are going to "high mileage" oils for no reason other then they have a high mileage engine ... whether or not their engines are demonstrating problems.

Most "high mileage" oils are just basic conventional oils that are formulated a bit on the thicker side of their respective viscosities, plus they add about 10% esters in the base oil for their slight seal swelling effect (which is very very minor I must add).

Some people are switching if their vehicles are consuming oil. The main reason people see reduced oil consumption (using high mileage oil) is due to their thicker viscosity.

Most of these oils appear to be marketing gimmicks. I am not saying they are "bad" oils ... just gimmicks.

The use of brake fluid and some "seal conditioners" is an old shade tree trick to reduce and sometimes stop fluid from by-passing seals. There is a downside to this under some circumstances (don't ask me to define it though)...once the "conditioner" has been thoroughly worked through and "dried up" or "used up" after time, the seals often may shrink more than what they were to start with. In my "not so professional" opinion, that has always been only a short-term bandage when often surgery is needed.

I myself have run my two Dakotas (one a V6, the new one a V8) to a specific pattern, always with Penzoil. I change the oil and racing oil-filter (no I don't race my trucks, as they are 4x4, but I like the higher flow rates) every 2,500 miles, regardless.

0 - 50,000 miles, 10w-30
50,000 - 75,000, 10w-40
75,000 - 125,000, 15w-40 High Mileage
125,000 up, 15w-50 Synthetic (after complete flush)

I also flush my oil-system every second change (every 5,000 miles) using two things. I first use a can of "Gunk Motor Flush" and then drain about 1/4 of the oil out. Then I add kerosene and repeat the flush (idle for 4-7min), then drain it all, replace filter, fill, go. It may sound stupid to run kerosene through your oil-system, but if you look at most motor-flush fluids, they are basically kerosene with a few additives. This has never harmed my engine and I talk to Jaguar mechanics who do this with their vehicles all the time to keep them clean. In fact, my roommate John has a 1987 Jaguar XJ6 (this was the last year they made Jaguars, all new Jags are Ford cars with the Jag name) and he does it in his car. Also, 1987 and prior Jags used inline airplane motors, and when Ford took over they ruined them by using V motors. Not that V's aren't great, but do you know a stock V6 that pushes 395hp like John's Jag? :D

I have an old '91 Dak with a V-6. I always changed the oil religiously, and always used the cheap no-frills blend of Valvoline oil (I never used Wal-Mart or auto parts store "house brand" oil) and a Fram filter. The engine has about 160K miles, and the lifters and valves have always (well, over 100K miles or so) rattled for a couple seconds before quieting down to a faint tap, tap, tap.

But then I got my new black 2003 CC Dak with the 4.7 and 5speed auto, and the ol' '91's been semi-retired. It's parked in the back yard until such a time I feel I oughta sell it or pass it down to a nephew whose gonna be getting his driver's license soon.

Anyway, I did the usual oil change, putting in the Valvoline and Fram oil filter, except this time, I added a half pint of everybody's favorite, some swear by it, some swear at it, and everybody puts it in their airplane engine-- Marvel Mystery Oil. Now the lifters rattle less after the truck sits up for two weeks than they did when I started the engine up on a daily basis, and the tapping is completely gone. MMO is supposed to break down deposits and flush them out, but I always used Gunk Motor Flush before each oil change. So maybe my engine's not as tired as it sounded before, it just needed a little extra lubrication provided by MMO.

MMO can also be added to gas to clean and lubricate injectors, fuel pumps, fuel pressure regulators, and any other moving parts in the gas flow path, and I've discovered that it works wonders as a light general purpose oil because it doesn't penetrate then evaporate like WD-40. Anyone else have experience with the "old-timer" oil additives like MMO, Rislone, etc.?

Marvel Mystery Oil (MMO) contains solvents in a mineral carrier. Many of these solvents are lighter fractions of petroleum, and will thin-out your engine oil.

You are going to have, as a result, a thinner motor oil and a modified additive chemistry that may be harmful.

Almost every oil company states in their technical sheets not to add aftermarket additives and there is good reason - aftermarket additives change the "delicate balance" of additve chemistry.

We just had a class on motor oils so i pulled up this old thread. High milage oils have a great concentration of esters which will contribute to some seal swell, some are actually engineered to promote it. ester's in too great a quantity can cause the seals in your engine to turn to jelly and blow up. if you don't have leaking seals in a high milage vehicle don't use high milage oils. my .02

I have a question....I just bought an 04 cavalier with 116,000 miles on it, the oil change tag says high mileage was used last time. Do I have to stick with high mileage oil now or can I go back to regular oil? Also the oil change place put in 10w30 oil even though it specifies 5w30 oil. Is this something to be concerned about?
