 Subject: 100 mph max?

Is there some sort of electronic governor on my '01 QC 4.7? I was cruising at 65mph(with the cruise control on), then I mashed the accelerator (as we say in the south), and the engine cut out at about 100mph? Can any one 'splain that one?

Yes there is a speed limiter. That is why there is no redline.

They have a rev limiter I just don't know what it is set at.

I heard some are set at 98mph and some set at 117mph, why would one truck have 117mph and another have the 98mph? I found out mine is set at 117mph, on the way home from an up north trip, I hit 110mph but had ta back off due ta too many cars ahead, (too bad)

i have 2 2001 quad cabs with 4.7 and the larger tires. after taking both up to 110-112 i had to let off. havent hit the rev limiters yet. will try tonight just to see!!!!

I have hit the speed limiter in my truck several times about 118. The rev. limiter though is set above 6000 because I have had the engine that fast before.

My old 2000 4.7l Dak had a rev limiter at 6300rpm, or something close to that.

your speed limiter is set at 98 if you have 15"
wheel/tire package (like me) it is set at 118 if
you have 16" wheel/tire package, or R/T
package. Tire rating is the only reason they
govern these trucks...I'm gonna get some z
rated tires, and try to make the Dealership
flash my computer! I've had it with the whole
runaround about aftermarket PCM's and
JetChips, etc.

Next time I will ask the tech line weather it can be removed with a flash from them but I am sure they will lauph in my face. I woulnd't be surprized if they wanted your warranty in exchange though even if it could be done.

O.K. THAT IS ODD. THEY HAVE DIFFERENT SPEED LIMITERS FOR DIFFERENT TIRE SIZE BUT THE OWNERS MANUAL STATES NOT TO EXCEED 80MPH. WITH THE 16 INCH TIRES. 265/75/16. SUPPOSE JUST FOR LEGAL REASONS. MY 66 MUSTANG HAS GONE 130 ON LITTLE OLD 14 INCH TIRES FOR YEARS BEFORE I LEARNED ABOUT SPEED RATING FOR TIRES AND THE SAFETY FACTORS.
SO IF I PUT SOME FIREHAWK RIMS AND TIRES CAN I GO 145? PLEASE ! PLEASE ! CAN I ?

I have a '01 CC 4.7 auto 3.55, w/ the 16 inch wheel package, and my speed limiter is set at 100/98mph. The rev. limiter is set at 6000rpm.
I hit the speed limiter daily,,(very rural area,,w/some pretty fast cats) And when I had it dynoed the guy took it all the way up to 6000 rpm before she shut down. But you ought to see how steeply the pwr starts to drop off after about 5300 rpm. Plus she wails like a Banshee at 6000rpm.

I've had my truck for 7 years, and have never once hit the limiter. You ever seen the results of a tire blowout at over a hundred MPH?
I'ts a good think the limiter isn't set
any higher, cause all you speed nuts would be out there trying to hit it! :-}
I ran a call on 400 north--anyone from metro Atl. knows this stretch--where a Dodge ram swerved to avoid another vehicle coming into his lane at over 90mph. After a 30min extrication, and 7 min ride to the ER he later died.
If he were alive today, He'd say " I know how to drive, dont need anyone telling me how to drive!!" just like all the other caveman brained testosterone filled little brats out there on the road today who dont even yield to a friggin Ambulance!! and dont use turn signals cause they dont want to warn the car next to him cause all they will do is speed up to cut you off, Oh no! God forbid if you let that driver in and you lose 5 seconds off youre drive. So lets just cut in front of somebody at 90mph because nobodywill let you merge?
Sorry about that. I got a little carried away. Damn, where did I put those pills?

WELL CHRIS W. COULDNT AGREE WITH YOU MORE. BUT THERE ARE STATISTICS ABOUT EVERYTHING DEPENDING ON WHAT WAY YOU YOU WANT THE STORY TOLD. A FRIEND GOT KILLED AT APPROX. 26MPH WHEN HIS HEAD HIT THE SIDE WINDOW. YES OVER 100MPH WITH A TRUCK INCREASES THE ODDS. BUT HEY I HAVE AN AIR BAG AND SEAT BELT. SO AT LEAST I WONT BE FAR FROM MY TRUCK. WELL I JUST HAD 265/75/16 MUD TIRES PUT ON IT THIS AFTERNOON AND NOW IT GETS LOOSE AROUND 85MPH SO THAT WILL SLOW ME DOWN WITH ONE OF THE TRUCKS. AND YES WILL ALL YOU A@@ WIPES MOVE OVER FOR THE AMBULANCE. THEY MAY BE COMIN TO SAVE ONE OF US NUT CASES ON OUR ROOF. THANXS.

kenne-bell has my pcm today and sadly they will not raise my limiter over 98mph. they said it was because of some drivetrain vibration or something?

Come on I have a 01 cc 4.7 5spd 3.92 4x4
My truck shuts down at 115 and the rev limiter
is at 6100rpm ...have more balls guys stick it
in neutral let it hit the rev limiter or get on
a wet road and dump it she'll hop up there and
bounce off 6100 easy she stops pullin about 5500
....I had a 00 4.7 auto 3.55 it shut down at 115
and rev limiter was 6300rpm...I live on a 2 lane
country road and very curvy road and i can keep
her up around 115 all the time.....It has 265/70/16's on it and truck rides and handles
great when you cruise at 114 mph for miles.....
all there is to it these Dak's are bad as hell
2x4 or 4x4......hell at 114 in my truck seems like
your only running about 70 or 80... And for you
5spd owners Get a centerforce clutch there sweet!

i dont know about the 4.7 but my 99 5.2 has been to 117 and it has 31x10.5 R15 tires and it gave no sign of slowing

98 5.2 119 recorded on gps top speed. Speedometer was around 115 When I hit the Gov.
I run 31x10.5 r15.
Where I live in the desert of las vegas. Every highway, every rural road is a 4-5 mile long straight, Once in a while I'll hold and push 110, only to see a guy in a sport bike blow by me like im standing still. And you think cars and trucks are scary at that speed. Try pushing 160-190 on two wheels..
WHAT A RUSH!!! CAN YOU SAY DEATH A CALLIN!!! LoL

My rt shuts off about 115mph but if you turn the key forward (as if your going to start the truck) it will not shut off and you can keep going faster and faster!!!

I've seen this speed override technique mentioned a number of times. But what happens when you try to "start" the engine while it's running?
1) Does the starter pinion get thrust into the flywheel? That would not be good for any of the parts involved while everything is in motion. Every American vehicle I've driven is not made to prevent starting an already running engine. This can't be good.
2) Is the start-override thinkgy a toggle action, or does it need to be held there? If it needs to be held in place I certainly would not want to be drving 100+ MPH with one hand.

LOL true Modain. Anyway, remember guys, this is a "truck". Not exactly designed for high speeds. Surely it will go faster than what its limiter is set at. Anyone remember my favorite car of all times, the Great Grand National? It was capable of over 160 mph with a V-6 but was prom chip limited to about 126. Buick said the reason was the chassis had too much front end lift at high speeds and couldnt handle well enough (kinda like a "truck" maybe?). The FBI purchased some of the only ones without the prom chip....hhmmm, wonder if they ever got retired and sold?

The story I remember about the FBI Buick Grand National GNX's in the late '80's were that they had larger turbos and extra rear suspension work. The FBI bought 50 for drug enforcement work, and the governor, for aerodynamic reasons, kicked in at 155 mph! There were quite a few regular GN's around running high 13 sec. 1/4 mi. with slight mods. Buick's average customer today is age 64 (no kidding). What a shame.
