Message: I know the owners manual states to run 87 octane, but is there any benefit to running a higher octane fuel once in a while. I just filled up with 89 for the first time. Was that just a waste of money on my part?

Message: There is no benefit to running higher octane. It may even reduce performance a little. Use the lowest octane you can without pinging.

Message: i think you guys are full of crap, i can tell a noticable differance in 97 and 93 octane gas, both in power and gas mileage imo run the 93 at all times i do, its not that much more expensive and it saves that money in gas mileage

Message: The only difference between 93 and 87 is the resistance to detonation. 93 will be less likely to spontaneously ignite under pressure than 87. If anything, the 93 will burn slower than the 87. I don't see how you can get a performance increase from higher octane unless you are suffering from detonation.

Message: Thanks J. That's what the manual stated, that I could lose performance with a higher octane. I'll just stick with 87 since $1.42 a gallon is enough for me to pay. The 89 was $1.53.

Message: Unless the owners manual specfically states to use a higher octane, don't waste your money. I think I can say in confidence that there isn't a Dakota manual that says to use 93.

Message: I am living proof that the higher octane gas doesn't do a damn thing for performance unless you have a computer upgrade that requires 93 octane. I actually gained 2 MPG after switching back to 87. I put 27-28K miles on my trucks every year, and high octane is just a waste for me.

Message: Agree that you should go with the lowest you can get away with without pinging. The higher you go, the more carbon buildup you will get and it does not help with anything other than ping reduction unless you've got a race setup that requires it. Just my .02 worth.
For those of you that are running 93 or have been for the last two months... do yourself a favor and clean your TB if you haven't done so. You may be surprised at all the carbon you find. And be very careful with your sensors when doing so.

Message: How do you know if your TB is dirty? I take my intake off all the time and I don't see any gunk or build up of any kind. I feel a better throttle response going with 93 octane over 87.

Message: Dirty throttle body??? Can somebody please enlighten me? On a fuel injected engine, the throttle body should have nothing to do with the fuel and thus there is no reason for it to have carbon build up. Air goes through the throttle body not exhaust or burned gas. Somebody please correct me if I am wrong.

The crankcase vent enters into the stock airbox, before the TB, this might explain what they are thinking is carbon, it's usually black & oily.

Message: well if you live in a state where only premium/Higher octane gas is non-oxygenated then spend the money because low octane/oxygenated gas is bad for your injectors and at $125 bucks an injector with 8 of them it could cost a lot down the road... so I pay the $.10 more at the pump.

Message: $125 and injector? Are you just taking the first price that comes along, or what? I can get FMS 24lb for $70 an injector. Of course, I have a connection, but still, you can do better than $125 each!

Message: I did think about that as I was typing my previous post and could not come up with a better term for that TB blackness other than "Soot". Well I know it's not "Soot" so there ya go.
Only reason I mentioned that you should check/clean the TB is cause I ran 87 octane prior to my first tune-up at 33K miles and cleaned the TB at that time. Not really all that bad. When I noticed pinging a few months ago, I switched to 93 octane and cleaned the TB again last month(65K miles). What I found was some nasty buildup.
For the same reason you would port/polish a part .. I would think that you should also want to keep airflow and response through the TB as optimal as possible. Hence, all the money we spend on cold-air intakes with high-efficient filters and bigger TBs. And it really is not that time-consuming or difficult so why the heck not.

Message: No I didn't take the first price that came along becuase i've never went out in search for a price but that's a price i've heard in the past, no matter if it's 70 bucks or 125 bucks, with 8 injectors it's still expensive.
