Subject: Squealing tranny IP: Logged
Message: I have a '98, 5.2, 5-speed with 80k miles. About 5k ago, I noticed a loud squealing or screeching when upshifting. The sound only happens upon release of the clutch. And the problem comes and goes. Can anyone relate?

Message: Yes, I can relate to a bearing that's going bad.
It's on the clutches pressure plate, I call them the 'throw out bearing', some people call them the 'pilot bearing'. Classic symptoms. It may last alot more miles, may go tomorrow.
Ever put in or replaced a clutch before? Probably not, cause you're asking this question. NO problem, there's lots of things I haven't done before either. Maybe you have also, not trying to flame here. Ask your best gearhead, that know's about clutches, or can even drive a standard, seems to be a dying art these days.

Message: How does it go when it decide to go? Will it get loud under normal driving? I have the same problem except it usually happens when starting from a stop on a hill or if I drop the clutch a little aggressively. I was worried at first but then I realized it would give me an excuse to journey into my truck's inner being. =) Thanks mucho. Also can somebody tell me how I figure out what tranny and t case I have? It's a 98 5.2 4x4.
