Subject: Starter removal IP: Logged
Message: Good Evening,
I am trying to remove the starter from my '87 3.9. The book says take the steering rod loose. Where? I have taken the bolt out of the middle of the steering rod. It looks to me like the top end of the bottom u-joint,(where the rod enters)should be some type of removable cap, but it ain't moving so far. Do I have to heat the damn thing?

Message: i just replaced mine on my 92 318 dakota. it said to do the same thing. i went to the dealer and they said remove it through the bottom. i got the two bolts out got the starter loose guided through hole in the bottom. and then took off the cables. installing the new one in the reverse order. p.s its harder to reinstall so make sure you have enough time to put it back together.
