Subject: 46RH vs 46RE swap???? IP: Logged
Message: I have a chance to buy a new 46RE transmission from a full size 4x4 Ram. I have a 92 Dakota 4x4, aside from the obvious electronic differences will this bolt up and in, I also just purchased the mating 5.9 engine (3 miles). Can the RH valve body be swapped into the RE case to keep the RH control or is there a stand alone controller for the RE transmission to work with my truck. I primarily use this for towing and 4 wheeling and will be using the MP computer from a 93 Ram. I just cant pass up this package deal but am leary about the transmission differences. Any help???

Message: notice the letter difference in the 46RH and 46RE, in other words one is hydrolic controlled the other is electrical, you'd have to convert your truck to an OBD II system to even think of using the transmission, the motor is different, you can put the basic motor in your older truck, but don't even think of swappin tranny's, you wouldn't gain anything, the actual guts and gear ratios of the transmission are the same. my suggestion would be to get just the motor.

Message: I knew some of that stuff, I just didn't know If I could just bolt my valve body in and change the govenor and it would work. This is the matching 3 mile trans so it would be sweet to make it work. Especially for the cost.

Message: Are you using the PCM from the 5.9 too? That would guarantee everything would work.

Message: dude not to be an ass hole, but forget about the tranny, you'd have to redo the entire wireing harness on your truck, the only thing you gain is a newer tranny that won't work on your truck, swappin the TB and govener won't work, if ya want a new tranny get yours rebuilt, there aretoo many differences in a 4rh and 46re for it to be even feasible to swap. also if the truck you got the tranny out of isn't 4wd you'd have so split the tranny apart and put your transfercase on it, seriously, get the motor, forget about the tranny, i've asked a few people about this, the tranny will NOT work, sorry. and if it makes a difference the guyi talked to has been building dodge transmissions for 15 years at the local dodge dealership, which is where i work as well.

Message: It's not that big a deal at all... There is a kit to use the electric tranny on the older trucks... It takes the place of the computer... I'm not sure exactly where I saw it... I would check with KRC or mabye Hughes... look around... the physical bolt up is the same, everything will match up.

Message: On the RH to RE swap? Just say no. Even a stand-alone controller would eat up anything you'd save on the initial purchase. It wouldn't cost any more to just get an RH and bolt it in.....and a lot less trouble.

It's so easy to not do what's sometimes very simple when we don't take off the blinders.
I found the 46RE substitute for a 46RH to be very simple in my 94 Grand Cherokee - one I knew what I was doing.

My best advice it to get your 46RH rebuilt and buy a shift kit with it.

Message: 46RH was used in the V8 Jeep GC in 93', from what
ive seen at my dealership it is a stronger
transmission than most give it credit for. Just
change fluid and filter every 30k and only use MS-
7176. I cant even begin to tell you how many
slushbox ram and dakota 44REs ive rebuilt...
