Message: Yes, the drop in K&N does improve mileage and performance.
But... save your money. If you intend to love your truck and add performance mods, go ahead, bite the bullet and get the FIPK (about $250).
I'll bet there are many people (like me) on this Forum that originally bought the drop in (about $50) and then bought the K&N FIPK (or other cold air intake).
I'll bet you can find a used drop in cheap.

Message: Seen some homemade chrome tube cold airs on eBay for the 4.7L, but no K&N. Run a search for K&N on google and you'll find out there's no FIPK for the 4.7 yet. Once in a while there's a K&N drop in on eBay. The only thing I could find for my '02 4.7L was an AirAid intake and I run with that for 3 seasons, in the winter I switch back to the stock sealed airbox to protect from salt, snow, etc. Hope this helps.

Message: Check ou the following URLs. Several homade intakes for the 4.7L starting from $20 up. It is suggested to use CPVC or ABS to reduce the possibility of sucking shattered or melted plastic into intake in cold wetather. (cold PVC can shatter upon impact or melt when heated)

Message: I have the 360 Air Intake on my 2001 4.7. It is a good quality piece. However, I did remove the pipe that connects to the TB because with it, the intake noise was very loud and there is no support for it (it conects to the TB and that's it). I was afraid that it could fall of or something while 4 wheeling. Now I'm running the filter and the first pipe connected to the airhat. As far as performance goes, I noticed a small increase in hp but no gain on MPG.
Good luck.

Message: I contacted the K&N folks about a cold air system for the 4.7. They told me they are working on it right now but have not achieved their performance expectations yet. According to there technical folks, they will not market a product until it provides a substantial improvement over the stock system.
By the way, I have been using the drop in K&N for about a year on my 2000 Dakota. I have consistantly seen a 1/2 to 1 mpg increase in milage. It has more than paid for itself.

Message: yes it will, it's not just there for looks...the tube (depending on the brand) was tested for better performance than stock...even stock with a drop in...cuz that rubber housing in stock isnt the best

Message: Well it should be better BUT I'm not too sure about their kit.. I wouldnt expect much from a $5 filter, which probably is just a paper unit (more restrictive then your K&N drop-in)..
Also, remember if there isnt any kind of heat shield, your CAI will suck HOT air right from your engine bay (while the stock box gets fresh cold air)
So what I say is keep the tube, buy yourself a good reusable filter, get a piece of sheet metal a make yourself somekind of heat shield..

Message: I recently learned from a mechanic of 30 years that the fine lint in the K&N filters and the like will start to cling on the small spring that sits inside the mass air intake. After 20K or so it will build up enough to stop the spring from vibrating. It vibrates and sends that to a sensor which controls the air fuel mixture. Its about $500 with parts and labour to change it. Or go with a high end paper filter.
I removed the K&N out of my Jeep 4.7 and will not be putting one in my 00dak Quad 4x4 4.7.
On regular carb and carb/throttle body type, no worries.
Just a word of caution.

Message: I had a K&N filter in my '02 for 120k with no problems. When I traded it in it still ran like a raped ape. I use them in all four of my vehicles. My daily driver (now a T&C) gets cleaned and oiled twice a year at about 20k.
