Message: i have an overheating prob. on my 5.2 durango, i have tried everything, replaced thermostat, waterpump, flushed the radiator, you name it, it still occasionally overheats, but only when sitting still or when doing slow around town driving, if it was a head or head gasket prob. wouldn't i see some water in oil or white smoke in tailpipe? I also never use any water, it is always full. i've been chasing this problem for about 2 months now, so any help would be appreciated!

Message: Well, lets start with your symptoms; overheats at idle or slow, stop and go traffic.
When you're driving on an interstate, you're ramming air across the radiator and allows the heat exchange to occur.
When you're at idle or low speed, you rely more on the fan to draw the air across the radiator.
Think about what would happen if your symptoms were opposite, i.e. you overheat on the interstate but everything is normal at idle and low speed. If you had an electric fan, and the polarity was reversed you would be pushing air forward. At idle this would be okay. At speed, this would keep air from going across the radiator since the fan is pushing forward and the ram air is pushing aft. The net effect is no air. Anyway, that is just an example for illustration, albiet the opposite of your condition.
You might check the fan to ensure proper fan clutch engagement. One way to do this (at your own risk) is to hold the fan while someone else starts the vehicle. Have them rev the engine to approx 2K RPM (while you hold the fan). When the temp gets to normal, let go of the fan. You should hear it ROAR to life as it locks up. You should only perform this check if you know what you're doing.
As far as combustion getting into the coolant; a repair shop can easily tell you if that is your problem. There is a dye which goes in a tool. The tool is hooked to the rad fill (where your cap goes). They draw vapors from the coolant steam (this is done while the truck is at idle with t-stat open). If the blue dye turns yellow, you have a cumbustion leak into the cooling system.
Good luck

Message: You might also have the timing checked and vacuum advance checked to make sure it's working properly.

Message: Check fan operation. I wouldn't hold the fan though. Start it cold and it should be engaged. Most of the time you will hear them roar cold. Or you can just spin it by hand with the engine off and feel for the resistance. Then I would let the truck warm up, allow the thermostat to open, remove the rad cap....CAREFULLY...and see if the coolant is being circulated through the rad. I'm thinking you may have a blocked cooling system.

Message: durango5.2slt-- sounds like your clutch fan isn't working--- let the truck get to about 210 F @ idle-- then lightly rev it up (3000 rpm max)-- if you don't get a 'ROAR!' from the fan with it moving a lot of air-- your clutch mech. is gone... Get a replacement--- or switch to an electric fan (I sell/use the viper fans-- and have a kit that will fit your vehicle as a drop in replacement.)

Message: jr-- have you ever checked your tranny fluid? -- wonder if you have a tranny issue-- overtemping, which then throws heat into your radiator. What gears on your 2000?
