Hi All,
Just bought a 2003 Dakota Quad with the 4.7 and the 5 speed auto. Everytime I start it up and begin to drive it makes a very loud noise and there is not much torque (like then tranny is not fully engaged so revs are high but power is low). This goes away after a few hundred feet of driving, when the engine becomes quieter and the torque returns. The truck then runs fine.
Is this normal on this truck?

It's normal. It's the radiator fan. It takes a few hundred feet of driving to loosen it up when cold.

It's really hard to say without knowing exactly how extreme a condition you're feeling. If you're really worried about it, go to the dealer and ask the service guy to take you on a quick drive in a new Dak on the lot.
I have an '03 4.7 and I don't notice that on my truck.

It's the old viscous fan scenario.
There are some good posts on this in the archives, and a new one turns up about once a week. A search on this site will yield many an answer.
Yes, it's normal, especially when it's a cold start-up.
Then, you could read all the posts, by others and myself, that have simply taken this thing off, cause you don't need a belt clutch/fan on this motor that comes with the electric fan anyway.
Welcome to the world of 4.7 daks-I think you made a good choice.

switch to an electric fan . it get rid of the noise. and gains you some hp

Dang, I hadz a big ol noise at start up dis mornin, I popped da hood and hell,,there was fur everywhere! Poor Mr. Boots musta liked that warm motor last night.Is it ok to leavs dahood up in the carwash??
