Subject: About to buy one. IP: Logged
Message: I'm about to buy an 03 Quad cab 4x4 and I have a few questions.
Which is better, The 4.7 with the 5 speed or the 5.9 with 4?
What lift options do I have?
Is is worth it to get the factory lsd or should I just get a locker later?
Are there an available locker for the front?
How well do the front diffs hold up to larger tires?
Do 15" wheels fit onto them?
I am ordering mine with 3.92 gears, the larger tires, heavy duty package, and lsd(maybe).
I plan on using it to tow my 5600lb travel trailer and also to do some wheeling. I want to lift it high enough to clear a set of 35 or 36" swampers.
Thanks in advance for any info. I hope to have her on the way by the end of the week.

Message: I'm on the verge of buying one too. I've decided on the 4.7 and 5 spd auto. Are they offering you a deal? I'm ordering a qc 4wd loaded. Best deal so far is $25.7 before ttl. How does that compare to what you've seen? This is about $6K less than when I looked last winter.

Message: Congrats on choosing a Dak. In my opinion you shouldnt get a Dak to tow. Get a big diesel. This all depends on the altitude you live at. I live at 6000ft and my Dak with mods wont go fast enough for me with my enclosed trailer.
Anyways...If you want a Dakota get this...
3.92 gears for sure. I like the modern ideals of the 4.7, and mods are coming along for this enging quite nicely. the 5.9L has more mods than Dolly Parton at this point. Towing wise I would get a 5spd if possible because the Mopar trannies arent exactly wonderful in the longevity category. The LSD works pretty well, but if you are going for a locker do it. I go off-road a bit and the LSD is fine. There are some really crappy lifts available for our trucks. Stay away from Truckin Suspension. The 3 inch Performance Accessories body lift is wonderful (I have it). Rancho is also making a 3 inch suspension lift soon. No gears are available yet other than the 3.92, time will tell. So If I were you, and I didnt live at sea level I would look for a two year old Ram diesel with 50K miles (just broken in) and buy that for 25-30K dollars. But the wallet is yours. I love my Dak regardless, but when I tow I get really pissed because I cant go 85 with my trailer, heheh. I hope that helps. A bit long winded

Message: If you want to lift your truck do not buy a Dak. I have 2001 and their is still not a single compay makeing a suspension lift for it yet. I am sure their are some one off's and custom jobs floating around but no off the shelf jobs. If you want to lift it up get a Ram. I also do not think that the quad cab is available with stick 5 spd manual shift only automatic.

I tow a 5,500 lb boat. The truck pulls it pretty nicely. At 5.5K you're at the recommeded max towing capacity. If you think you'll exceed that you might want to run with the 5.9L. Since you want to lift it and put big tires on it you better really consider the 5.9L.

Sandman, my post above was in reply to your statement.

Message: The 3.92 gears will be fine with the 31" tires, but if you put 35's on it you won't like the way it pulls. It will be a total pig. If you're going to pull alot I'd advise against the bigger tires. If you must have them, switch the gears to 4.88's or at least 4.56's, if they are even available. I agree with Crusty though, that if you're going to be pulling all the time your best bet is to get a full size diesel.
