I think I read that as you think a Dak gets 13mpg at best?
even pulling my catamaran, I've never got as low as 13mpg!
MIxed driving usually sees 17-19, including a weekend boat tow to the beach.

With 1800 miles so far, I'm averaging about 11 or 12mpg in town, and around 17mpg highway. First new vehicle. Can someone tell me when motor should be fully broken in and getting optimum gas mileage? Has anyone noticed the actual mileage increase after putting a topper on?

I have a 05/QC/4x2/5.7HEMI.. I just recently went on a round robin trip from texas to Iowa to South Dakota and back and was hard pressed to get 13MPG highway.. granted, I was hitting 75-80mph with a wicked headwind but still. Also, the Ethenal they sell up there drops 1 MPG off giving me 12MPG.
otherwise, I've been getting in the 13mpg range highway or city.

Mix City/Highway - 16.5 mpg.
City Average - 15.5 mpg
Highway Average - 20 mpg
Best Highway - 24 mpg (335 mile trip, never duplicated, must have had the wind at my back)
First 30,000 miles I averaged 330 miles per 18 gallons. Shortly after I went to 300 miles per 18. Last fall I was at 270 miles per tank, and recently im down to 230 miles.
All my mods were done early on, and the decrease in mileage has been happening over the last 2 years despite constant oil changes and correct care care. I've had a tune up at a dealership with no result.
Gonna ditch this truck for a magnum if gas tops $3 a gallon again.

Best hiway mileage: 21 mpg US / 24 mpg Imp
checked doing the math - matches overhead computer within 1/10th mpg
Average speed on that 349 mile trip about 60 mph
All original except K&N, about 14,000 miles on truck for that trip. Now it has 20,000 and still getting 18 mpg US in the winter on the hiway.
When I change the spark plugs at 25,000, it will get Champion copper tip. I swear by them, from good experience.
For oil, I run dino Castrol GTX 5W30, year round.
Oh, Mr. Sleepy: Count yourself very fortunate if you are paying less than $3 a gallon for gas.
I live in northern Ontario, Canada, and am paying about $3.60 Canadian / $3.20 US. At the worst during Katrina the price hit $5.70 Can/$5.00 US. Hope that you feel better about your gas prices now!

Message: 1999 Sport Club Cab 5.2 liter, 5 speed, 3.55 axle ratios, 4x4 came stock with the 31x10.50r15 tires,
I was getting around 14.5 mpg when I first got it fifteen months ago with 72k miles on it. Then I had a Flowmaster 40 series muffler put in place of the stocker, leaving the rest of the exhaust alone. That got my mileage up to around 15.2 MPG.
I then put an airaid warm air intake on it; that made no difference to my MPG whatsoever, i was still getting 15.2mpg with every fillup.
I then took that piece of garbage Airaid intake off and put a 9" round open air cleaner air hat thing on it. But first I replaced the air cleaner hold down with an "S" screw and then I put a 2 7/8 inch tall K&N air filter in that air cleaner air hat thing. With that, my gas mileage went up to an average of 16.2 mpg.
All of these gas mileage numbers are with a daily mix of city and highway driving. I also figure them out using a calculator, the overhead computer is never off by more than like .4 mpg though.
I'm 500 miles into an www.auto-rx.com cleaning cycle which has made a miraculous difference of the driveability of this truck. I also did an induction cleaning with Sea Foam yesterday. I haven't gotten any firm numbers yet but according to the overhead computer, my gas mileage is higher than normal so far.

Appears to have increased mpg dramatically!?
I will get another read Wedsnesday.
I fill til it spills and use a calculator.
Heading to Myrtle this weekend and should get real world highway numbers.
Next thing I am considering is removal of muffler and or TB spacer add.

Message: I feel bad for these guys that care about consumption but are not able to develop methods or plans to achieve better MPG. What is important when driving economically, is the concentration on the subject. A radio may be very harmfull if you can`t hear the engine and act accordingly.
To be a efficient driver requires some passion.
It may be difficult on the begining, but it is also fun to get better and better each day.
Last week i drove 502 miles on 21.6gallons.
That is better than 22.6 mpg.
As a matter of fact my actual ave is 22 mpg for the last 2000 miles. To be honest, it is not easely done, but if you could come from 13 to 14 and to 15 ... 16 and maybe 17, is allready ok.
Try to obey the speed limits, avoid abrupt accelerations, gain speed gradually.
Deffinitely avoid brakeing. Keep some distance from the vehicle ahead to cushion for speed changes. Keep your car alligned and fine tuned at all times. Tire pressure is very important.
My truck is a 2000 SLT plus CC 2wd 4.7 3.92lsd 5 sp manual with fipk2, 68 fast man TB, HO intake and cams, Gibson headers and single 3in cat back, 180* tstat, no clutch fan, Jet 2 etc.
The truck has 120k miles on synthetic everything and super gas from mobil or shell Vpower.
It never run better than now.
My normal driving is good for 20 mpg mixed city/road and includes some noisy dayly driving too.
I know; it is some what difficult to believe, and will not get much better for sure
