Subject: 4.7 L mods - what's the 1st step?
IP: Logged

Message:
Have a 2002 Dak QuadCab with the 4.7 L V8. What's the best first step to boost low end/off the line performance? Chip? Intake? Exhaust? Throttle Body? any help based on your experiences would be appreciated.

4.7 HO cams and intake from your local Mopar/Jeep dealer....cost me 230.00 in parts and 12.00 in labor, most cost effective upgrade we have out for that engine right now.

I am not sure about full throttle, but under normal driving just the cams will give your 4.7 better power around 1500RPM. I just installed the cams and it is easier to launch from a stop. Hope that helps.

Start with shocks, get rid of the stockers and get some KYB's or any quality shock, this is a huge mod in performance, just not speed counts when it comes to performance (although nice!) body roll and brake dive and rear squating off the line all suck! Improve the quality of the ride then bumpup HP/Trq. you will be glad you did!
Atleast with this mod you feel the difference right away unlike a throttlebody or cold air intake where the difference is not noticed until other things are done.

Strat79,

Is that a '79 Stratocaster?

Anyway, I have a 4.7 5spd. After seeing NUMEROUS posts on mods vs. HP/TQ increases, (and sometimes decreases!), I learned the easy way, (reading here mostly), that this 4.7 is one hot momma from the factory already, and often alot of $ and effort produces little to no results.

I would do it in this order:

1. Remove belt driven clutch/fan - free
(trust me on this on, you don't need it, and the pulley won't come off!) results in quicker throttle response and some more HP - free
2. depending on your wallet- an air intake.
mine's homebrew with a K&N, works great! - not much $
3. Porting the 68mm TB with dremel - Free
4. HO cams- about $120 shipped, - big increase in low end, dyno proven, but still a stock, mild cam, stock drivability.
5. HO intake, some say you actually don't loose TQ, and you get more in the higher ranges. There are some dyno sheets that have been posted.
6. If you have mega mods, or you just want a more redneck/louder sound, get a cat back, etc. - little gains dyno, ofte na loos in low end.

Hey texastodd,
Did you loose the belt driven fan all together and if so did you install an electric fan? Thinking about doing that to my 4.7 Quad Cab. Also, did you install the HO cams yourself and if so how difficult was it, if not how expensive was it to have done?

dakotaman,

Welcome to the 4.7 world.

You will gain alot from reading previous threads on these subjects, including pros and cons, detailed instructions, etc. Do the search here on this site.

Our 4.7's already come with an electric fan. Don't try and put another, you don't need it. Maybe just the 180 therostat, so a search on that one too.

I installed the cams myself, someone I met from these boards who lived in my town helped, and we did two trucks back to back. his and mine. I"ve built entire engines before, BUT, all the tips and istructions I found and downloaded from this site made it much easier. If so many had not already done it, I would have thought it was not possible with dissassemling much more.

Feel free to e-mail, but, I'm not trying to be a jerk, just giving the best advice, do searchs here, and read on these subjects, you'll save lots of $ and headaches! I have.

I live in Kingwood, but my girl friends parents live in Pearland. I'm thinking about putting out a thread on this site to find out how many dakota owners here are in the Houston area and putting together a little meet and greet sometime say at the drag strip in Baytown. Think it's a good idea?

On the delphi forums, there is a bunch, mostly R/T guts, but all types DAks, that meet at HRP, usually on Friday nights.

Check into the delphi forum, I think it's under R/T something or other, but lots of 4.7 guys contribute too.

hehe, yep, $12.00, $4.00 a day at my local hobby shop for a stall and tools unfortunatly, I could only put about 3 hours a day in due to work. As for voiding the warrenty, unless they take off your covers and look for the HO markings, no way they could tell.

they rplaced my 5speed manual, under warranty, for a third gear synchro problem. It had the HO cams, NO belt fan, etc. and they never said a word.

My friend had to take his in under warranty after we installed his HO cams, it seems we knocked one of the lifters off(they just set on, no bolting), and they fixed that for free, and never even asked how that might have happened, or about the HO cams.

Josh,

4hrs labor, run you about $200?
