Subject: 5.2L - Cracked Block? IP: Logged
Message: Well I'm rebuilding my 5.2L ('92 Dak CC 4x4). I disassembled and brought the heads, block, pistons, crank in to the body shop to get the block bored and valve job. First I got a phone call after the heads were magnafluxed. They were cracked it a few different places. No big deal, I was actually expecting it a little from what other people have been telling me about the Magnum Heads. I got a new pair of stock heads for very cheap.
Yesterday the machine shop called me and said that he found 4 cracks in the block at the cyl head bolt holes. This is not good. I'm not sure what I should do at this point. Before I started this project I was concidering just finding a 5.9L to work with, but then decided that the 5.2 would be fine. I already have pistons for .030 over 5.2L, MP RollerRockers, MP 5.2L gaskets, MP cam, and lots of little stuff. Is this going to work with a 5.9L if I decide to go with that?
Does anyone have any suggestions for me? I need to either: 1-find a 5.2L block; 2-find a 5.2L engine; 3-find a 5.9L engine.
Resources for where I can find any of these things would be great!
PLEASE HELP!!

Message: You can try to look for a junkyard 5.2 but you don't what you're going to get with that.
I would look at an MP 360 mpi short block. You'll get something that's been magged, with a new crank and pistons, and an R/T cam (then you could sell the one you bought to recoup some money). And you'll save on assembly costs on the short block. You can use your heads and all the other gaskets, rockers, etc.that you've already bought.

Message: Find yourself another 5.2L block if you can... the engine machine should be able to track on down.... if not, I've got a 5.2L block sitting in the shop...

Message: Do you trust that shop or have you seen this yourself?? The 318 blocks are nearly bomb proof unless the engine has been really abused. I have rebuilt many 318's with 150,000 - 350,000 miles on them and never seen crack's when magnafluxed. The heads are tough also, but if you say they are cracked then just find another good 318.
There is usually several 318 chrysler engines to be found in salvage yards for cheap. If you find cracks in their blocks, then the bone yards will usually exchange it for another (check with salvage yard first and explain what your doing).
I would reccommend staying with the 5.2 as they are usually better for duability.

Message: What years of blocks can be used for the magnum line of motors?? I posted about the MPI 360 short blocks but i would rather not have to deal with the internal/external ballancing issues.
dkota_rt???
"I would reccommend staying with the 5.2 as they are usually better for duability." I am not doubting you, but why is the 5.2 better?? thicker cylinder walls, more rigid block??
Thanks,

Message: nathaniel - 92 and up are the years I think...
The 318's rotating assembly is not only lighter than the 360, but the internal balancing can make a difference... The 318 can rev a little quicker and higher than the 360's...
Food for thought - the Fastest street legal, street driven(as in drove it to the track, threw on the slicks and raced!) Dakota R/T ("Big Bird" owned by Ron Merx) is not running a 360 or 408 stroker... he is running a 387 (318 stock bore w/4.00" stroke)... he ran 10.771 at 131.70mph...and that was even with a small bog off the line and spinning the tires for the first 100+ feet!!!
And it's an extended cab, too...
Later!
