I am trying to get into a new (maybe used) dakota cc, but can't decide which engine to get. I want ot have an engine more for racing, not towing, but i don't need something stupid fast, especially since the v8s costs more gas and insurance. Is the v-8 that much faster than the v-6? Also, has anyone been to www.carsdirect.com? You can buy new cars there for under invoice. I can get a new Dakota cc v8 5speed sport plus for less than 19 grand.

Go for the V-8 It is worth the extra price up front. The v-6 can barely pull itself up a hill none the less haul ass. I had a 95 dak with a v6 and even with the mild work I did it was pretty slow. Sure it could run with any Honda, Nissan, or Acura I saw but its not enough. I eventually caved in and did a mild build up on a 318 for my truck. Since then, reliability and fuel economy have gone up. On trips to and from school (60 miles either way) I get about 16 mpg average. With the six I was struggling for 13.

I have never made a complete pass down the strip but I had mid 14s with a basically stock 318. With my new trans I'm sure I could do much better at the track, but I've got tuition coming and can't chance it. At that time I still had the trans from the six cylinder and finished the run with two operating gears (2 and o/d) The V-8 is capable of some good speeds if you want it to, and gas milage isn't that bad either.

i did check out the mpg of both the v6 and v8 5speeds, th v8 is 14/16, i think, about that, the ev6 is 15/21, so it is not much different. But is the v-6 really that bad? i have a 2000 2.5l right now, it isn't too bad, just has no top end, the v6 has to have some top end, doesn't it, and i live in phoenix, not many hills here.

The V6 isn't -that- bad, although I've never owned one with an auto... it's actually pretty decent in a stick shift. I suppose it -would- probally suck if you got an Automatic, since those rob power pretty good. My V6 makes decent power until just shy of 5k, and starts making it around 2250. Peak seems to be about 3750.

If you can afford it though, go with a V8. Wish I had been able to find one when I was looking with a stick, but the V6 does just fine for me. I'm -definatly- eyeing the stroker kit that is supposed to be coming out for it... 4.7L V6 that can still be supercharged? That sounds like fun.

I think Todd meant he's going to stroke a 3.9, and get it to a 4.7?

My 4.7 QC 5spd manny tranny, was rated at 15/20 from DC, and that's pretty accurate.

GO WITH THE 8 MAN!

I concur with Texas Todd's assessment. Both on Todd W's stroking intentions and on getting the V8. Hmmm, that 2nd sentence sounds kind of dirty.

4.7 V8 is the only way to go! I have one with the automatic but the 5 spd manual is even better.

Hi, I have a 98 Ex.Cab Dakota : 3.9 V6 w/ auto, air, cruise, Just turned over 190,000. Mostly Highway mileage. Only work on it was new rear axle bearings and seals(left seal leaking so while axles out do the bearings @ 152,000)Still strong engine - always bogs down on the hills, (cruise on still drops from 70 mph to 50 mph) 20 mpg highway--17 mpg city.Had the oil changed at 4000 all the time,Got my moneys worth but now can afford extras this one did not have. Just ordered new 2003 Ext.Cab with 4.7 V8 w.5 speed auto.Fully loaded.

I had a '92 5.2 V8 Auto RC that got 17=18 mpg on a 3:55 gear most of its life. My '01 4.7 5-speed RC 3:92 gets 18-19 every day. Worst ever was 16. Don't give up that much joy for 1 or 2 mpg. Its hilly where I live...V6 owners barely get 20 here.
