Subject: New belt for more horse? IP: Logged
Message: I was thinking about getting a different belt for my 1997 5.2L. I've got AC but never use it and was wondering if I'd run into any complications in just bypassing the AC pulley with a new belt. Any help is appreciated.

Message: well dude, ur lookin at only a minor increase in hp and tq, ur talkin like 2 hp nothin really major at all maybe 5 tops, the only reason i would do a bypass job is if i had done everything possible and needed that extra bit to beat that pro street car goin down the strip

Message: To get a decent or "almost" noticable HP gain get the power pulleys for your 5.2,, I am jealous because I want power pulleys but no one seems to make them for a 4.7,,,more HP AND keep your AC!! Just about $100 I think,, not sure for your application,,,RIDE ON!!!

Message: Not worth the effort, just keep the A/C off.
2-5 HP to spin the rotor is waaaaayy off-try about 0.2 HP. The difference is so small you can't even measure it on a chassis dyno.
There is a power pulley for the 4.7, but it's only the crank pulley, not an entire set. I think ASP makes it for about $250.

Message: I would run only a underdrive crank pulley myself. Summit has one for $55. If you want to try it then bypass the air conditioner compressor. The only way to know how much it will help is to try it. I know guys that have spent more money and got less results than what this will do for you.

Or...just take somebody's word for it because they might have data that proves it.
Not griping, just trying to save ya'll some money and trouble.

Message: take off the belt and spin the compressor wheel, WITH THE ENGINE OFF!! you can spin it 5 or 6 revolutions with a turn of your wrist... it only drags a lot when it is engaged... don't waste your $$$...

Message: Forget the underdrive pulleys too, they are a waste of money and will kill your batery. After thress batteries mine went bye, bye and I did not notice any difference in power.

Message: try spinning the ac wheel at 5500 rpm and see what kind of drag it produces?

Message: The drag won't be much more at 5500 than at 10 rpm because the compressor is not kicked in so your only spinning the clutch assy.
I agree with labrat. The miniscule difference would not even be noticed.

Message: Lab rat and the others that agree are correct.... but not even .2hp spinning a free bearing. If you put a short belt on the engine your ac will eventually fail too. When the climate control is in defrost mode the compressor runs for two reasons. One, to keep the seals on the shaft wet and two, so that dry air can hit the windshield during high inside-cab humidity defrosting. Keep the 'a/c' potential intact.

Message: i think there is a differance at higher rpm's. yeah i wouldnt do it myself but if you go to the track you could bypass for that time prob not worth it just a thought.
also its gotta be a least 5hp to do that. maybe maybe not!
and doesnt your heat run off the compressor in newer vehicles? i'm pretty sure it does so taking it off in the winter woulnt be a good idea.

Message: It doesn't use very much power. Even at higher rpm's. If that were the case, you should remove your idler pully also.
If you are dead set on removing the AC from the belt, you may as well remove the AC unit all together. Your gain from the weight reduction will be more than from the belt change.
