Message: Make sure they take a sample for testing. They should flush the entire system and when they put the new/reman pump on make sure they fill it with ATF+4 instead of the old power steering fluid. Their is a TSB that tells them to switch to ATF+4 if they have to service the power steering system. It instructs them to flush the system first. Also check the pulley and make sure it is true and not damaged. Any side loading of the pulley due to warpage will kill a pumps bearings.

Message: I have a 2002 V8 4.7L 4x2 Dakota with a good amount of miles. I took my truck in for power steering issues (grinding noises in rear and front). My mechanic, in 1 week, installed 3 pumps..... 2 refrub then finally a new one which they said would continue to make some noise until it was 'broken in'. Not even a year later I need another replacement pump.... no good

Message: The power steering pumps made or rebuilt today are of low quality. I went through 4 rebuilt power steering pumps from Autozone. After the second pump roared like a lion, the salesman said I must be installing them wrong.
I told him I have been a mechanic for 34yrs. and have installed over 30 power steering pumps.
Well after arguing two more pumps were installed
and they roared like a lion. The system was bleed many times.
Since the new ones were from the same company that the rebuilts came from I decided to
go to the junk yard.
Got one, no more noise, no problems. Should of seen the look on the salesmans face when I showed him the powering steering pump from the junk yard installed in the truck along with the receipt from the junk yard.

Message: Paige, If they didn't then flush out the system,
don't just replace the pump. If any junk is in
the system it'll destroy a pump in no time.
Allen, it's not just PS pumps. Most of the
rebuild parts are junk nowadays. A lot of the
newer parts are poor quality too. It's all about
saving a buck. Name brand parts, not the store
name, but the suppliers name, are the way to go.
Boneyards are a great solution for the more
expensive items.
