 Subject: 360 for a 318 swap.

Hiya gang.
I am about to get my grubby little hands on a 360. I am swapping out a 318. I have a 98 CC 4x4. If I remember correctly it has teh NV3500HD 5spd tranny and the NP231 xfer case. My question is this: What am I going to need to change to put the 360 in? Mounts, flywheel, clutches, that sort of thing. Thanks for any help you can give.

The 360 is Externally Balanced and there is no AFTERMARKET flywheel available for the 360 unless you have in balanced internally Hope ya Get it done WOULD LUV TO SEE 360 5speed

Order a stock ½ton flywheel, or the one for the Mopar Performance crate engine.
2001 RC 4.7 5sp 9.25" 3.92 LSD
Ported 68mm throttle body, IAT adjuster, 3" flowmaster cat back, TPS @ .76V, 4" cold air, Roadmaster active suspention, Removed Third cat. Electric fan Convertion, Awaiting HO cams.
Working on adjustable fuel pressure with return.

Greets all.
Well after fussing with my oil pressure problems (its amazing what mud will do the the internals of an engine), I bit the bullet and we dropped in a 360(5.9). The donor came out of a 96 2x4 Ram. The only real snafu was the flywheel. I still cant believe DC wants 500$ for a hunk of steel. The most difficult part was swapping the wiring harness over. Im still running the 318 computer untill I can find a 360 one I can afford. Other than being a little confused, it seems ok. I know I have a bad cat, so that might be the problem. We will see this afternoon. Getting another put on.
Will post pics as soon as my new digital camera comes in.

Greets,
Well after a new cat, distro cap and rotor, and getting the plug wires in the right order(donno how that happened), she is running SWEET! No error lights, can now light up those big 36in meats, and can also run in 5th gear! Bout to head out, so here is a breif rundown:
Truck:
1998 Dakota Sport 4x4 CC
5spd
3.55 gears
36in SuperSwampers
Old Motor:
5.2
New Motor
1996 5.9 (Ram 2500 2x4)
Had to buy new clutch and thro-out bearing (needed replacing)and flywheel/balancer.
Anything that got pluged into a wiring harness had to be swapped from the 5.2 to the 5.9. A 96 RAM 5.9 harness is different from a 98 Dakota harness at the computer and fuse block. So far the 5.2 computer is running the 5.9 just fine.
Gotta run but there is a start.

Ken, you will need a balanced converter for whatever year the 360 is. If it's '96 or newer, the flexplate carries the balance weight, but the bolt pattern is different from pre-96 units, so they only match '96 or newer torque converters.

Oh, an option.....B&M sells balancer plates that bolt between the flexplate and the converter. If your converter is in good shape, save some money and get the B&M balancer.

if you cant find one, just go to a tranny/converter shop and have em balance it.. shouldnt cost more than $10-15

I Have a 81 318 out of a ram, will a 98 and older dakota flywheel fit
Doing and engine swap into my jeep. Dodge Ram 318 W/ 360 heads, dakota bellhousing off of 3.9 and a 2001 jeep NV3550. This combo looks good and lines up well, just making sure I get the right flywheel clutch and starter.
